Notes: Lasing characteristics have been investigated systematically in long-wavelength InGaAs separate confinement heterostructure quantum well laser diodes (SCH QW LD's) with varied well thicknesses and number of wells, for the first time. Marked improvements in threshold current density and characteristic temperature values have been observed in SCH MQW LD's to SCH SQW LD's. Maximum cw output power of 46 mW at 20 °C has been achieved in SCH QW LD's with five wells, which is the highest among the long-wavelength quantum well LD's.

Notes: We obtained damage-resistant crystals of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) by reducing organic impurities in the growth solution. To prevent organic impurity exuded from the wall of the growth vessel, Pyrex glass was used. The residual organic impurities, which mainly derived from KDP raw powder, were reduced by photochemical dissociation using a combination of ultraviolet light and an oxidant (hydrogen peroxide). The resultant total organic carbon of the solution was less than 0.1 ppm. The damage threshold of the crystals grown from this solution was always high (20–22 J/cm2), which is about three times higher than that of crystals grown by conventional methods.

Notes: Single-crystal gallium nitride was grown on each of the two polar {0001} planes of 6H-silicon carbide substrates utilizing metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy. The substrate polarity is clearly shown to strongly influence the surface morphology and the photoluminescence property of the layer. The examination of the layer surfaces using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that {0001} GaN grown on the basal planes of SiC changes its polarity in accordance with the substrate polarity.

Notes: The chromogenic limulus test has been applied for the first time to detect an organic impurity contained in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals. Impurities arise from microbes present during crystal growth, and are responsible for a reduced laser damage threshold. A sensitivity of 10 pg/g KDP (10−5 ppm) was achieved, provided that the KDP solution was neutralized to ∼pH 7. Endotoxin content in the prismatic region of KDP crystals grown in a microbe-rich solution was approximately 100 pg/g KDP. The presence of an organic material in seemingly perfect KDP crystals could be experimentally confirmed.

Notes: The design and operation of the time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer developed for ionic photofragmentation studies of molecules is described. Characteristics are summarized for three different operation modes of the TOF spectrometer; a pulse mode, a photoelectron–photoion coincidence mode, and a photoion–photoion coincidence mode. Experimental results for SiH4 are demonstrated as an example for the performance of the apparatus.

Notes: A series of experiments focused on high neutron yield has been performed with the Gekko-XII green laser system [Nucl. Fusion 27, 19 (1987)]. Deuterium–tritium (DT) neutron yield of 1013 and pellet gain of 0.2% have been achieved. Based on the experimental data from more than 70 irradiations, the scaling laws of the neutron yield and the related physical quantities have been studied. Comparison of the experimental neutron yield with that obtained by using a one-dimensional fluid code has led to the conclusion that most of the neutrons produced in the stagnation phase of the computation are not observed in the experiment because of fuel–pusher mixing, possibly induced by the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. The coupling efficiency and ablation pressure have been calculated using the ion temperature measured experimentally. A coupling efficiency of 5.5% and an ablation pressure of 50 Mbar have been obtained.

Notes: The distribution of kinin in the CNS of the rat, which was extracted with n-butanol from an acidified homogenate, was determined using a bradykinin (BK) radioimmunoassay system. The immunoreactive kinin was widely distributed throughout the brain. The highest content was found in the pituitary gland (4,135 fmol BK Eq/g), followed by the medulla oblongata (912 fmol/g), cerebellum (549 fmol/g), and cortex (512 fmol/g). The kinin in the posterior pituitary was concentrated 4.5 times as much as in the anterior lobe. Serial dilution of brain extracts produced binding curves parallel to the standard radioimmunoassay curve. The purified brain kinin comigrated with authentic BK during CM-cellulose chroma tography and Sephadex LH-20 gel chromatography. Its molecular weight was estimated to be 1,127$45 by gel filtration, which coincides well with that of BK. Chymotrypsin degraded the extracted kinin and authentic BK, but trypsin did not. These data demonstrate that a peptide indistinguishable from BK exists in the rat brain. Furthermore, pituitary kinin was separated into BK (87%), Lys-BK (10%), and Met-Lys-BK (3%), using reverse phase HPLC.

Notes: The DNA–anti-DNA antibody immune complexes were isolated from plasma of systemic lupus crythematosus (SLE) patients and DNA fragments separated from immune complexes were subjected to molecular cloning. The resulting recombinant DNA clones showed a molecular size of 37–79 base pairs, a high guanine and cytosine content, high frequencies of CpG dinucleotides, and palindromic sequences, and also clusters of G+C- and A+T-rich segments. These clones hybridized randomly to total human DNA. The reactivity of dsDNA antibodies, both monoclonal and polyclonal, from SLE was examined with a cloned SLE antigen DNA. A competitive inhibition assay showed that human monoclonal antibodies had at least one magnitude higher affinity to the cloned DNA than to the native DNA fragments. In order to characterize the factors that were recognized by antibodies, human G+C-rich and also A+T-rich 100 bp DNA fragments were cloned, and their base sequences determined. The antibody showed a higher affinity to the G+C-rich DNA fragment (71% G+C) than to the A+T-rich DNA fragment (46% G+C). When cytosines in CpG doublets in G+C-rich fragments were methylated (mCpG), the reactivity increased up to 100-fold. The native anti-DNA antibodies from SLE patients also showed preferential binding to G+C-rich fragments. These observations suggested that human anti-dsDNA antibodies may recognize some unique structures around the G+C regions or G+C clusters of DNA.

Notes: Summary A method was devised to obtain a correct surface tension vs. equilibrium concentration curve for a very dilute solution of surface active substance, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate dissolved in an aqueous solution of saturated ammonium sulfate, where the decrease of the bulk concentration due to the adsorption is not negligible. Adsorption isotherm was obtained by applyingGibbs adsorption equation to the curve, and the pressure vs. area curve was plotted. The latter plot is in agreement with that directly measured for the spread film on saturated ammonium sulfate solution, the surface pressure of which was obtained by the extrapolation to time zero of the plot of log surface pressure vs. square root of time. The amount of calculated saturation value is in agreement with that directly measured by the radiotracer method. These agreements show the validity of the present method of obtaining surface tension and adsorption isotherms, together with the method of extrapolation to obtain the surface pressure vs. area curve for soluble film.
