Notes: Light scattering experiments are reported on semidilute, aqueous solutions of rod-like fd-virus (length L=880 nm, molecular weight 16.4×106 dalton) near the overlap concentration c*=1 particle/length3. In solutions of very low ionic strength, a liquid-like structure with a significant intensity maximum of the elastically scattered light is observed. The structure is caused by the electrostatic interaction of the charged rods. It vanishes, when enough salt is added so that the interaction potential is screened on the interparticle distance. The scattering vector qmax of the maximum scales with the fd concentration as c1/2. The experimental values for qmaxL fit very well to Monto Carlo simulations if the concentration is scaled to c*. Dynamic light scattering of the fd solutions reflects the influence of the static structure factor in the same way as observed for interacting spherical macromolecules: The first cumulant of the field correlation function divided by the square of the scattering vector shows a behavior reciprocal to that of the static structure factor.

Notes: Abstract: A significant proportion of the acetylcholinesterase that is present in the electric organ of Torpedo californica exists as a presynaptic membrane molecule. The monoclonal antibody Tor 23 binds the Torpedo presynaptic nerve membrane where it recognizes a polypeptide of 68,000 daltons. Our present studies indicate that Tor 23 identifies acetylcholinesterase. From the homogenates of Torpedo nerve terminals, Tor 23 immunoprecipitates measurable esterase activity. Esterase precipitation was not observed with no Tor 23 added; nor was it observed with any other test antibodies, including other Tor antibodies, in particular, Tor 70, which binds, as does Tor 23, to the presynaptic nerve membrane. The esterase activity was specific for acetylcholinesterase. Our studies indicate the molecule defined by Tor 23 has the solubility properties described for that of presynaptic acetylcholinesterase: it is soluble in detergent-treated electroplax homogenates and insoluble in high-salt extractions. In sections of Torpedo back muscle, both nerve and endplate acetylcholinesterase can be detected histochemically. Tor 23 localizes to the nerve and is not clustered at the endplate. The utility of the antibody Tor 23 thus includes biochemical and histological analyses of the multiple forms of acetylcholinesterase.

Notes: Cylindrical cavity targets with inner diameters between 200 and 300 μm have been irradiated with 4 J, 80 ps, Nd:glass laser pulses through a 100-μm-wide longitudinal slit. From the spatially resolved temporal and spectral behavior of the x-ray emission along the axis, data on temperature and density of the expanding primary and secondary plasmas and of the region of collision have been obtained.

Notes: X-ray spectra in the 5–15 A(ring) spectral region are presented for various elements with atomic numbers between 9 and 82. Plasma was produced by irradiating plane targets with 1-J, 800-ps frequency-doubled Nd:glass laser pulses at λ=527 nm. The characteristics of the spectra can be varied from pronounced K- and L-shell line emitters (F to As) to nearly continuous x radiators such as W or Au.

Notes: A frequency-doubled 2-GW Nd:glass laser with a small satellite pulse (1% of the main pulse) was used for investigations of the soft x-ray conversion efficiency in double-pulse irradiation of planar Cu targets. The separation of the two pulses was varied between ±1.3 ns, and the pulse duration between 45 and 800 ps. For the case of a prepulse, an enhancement of the soft x-ray emission by a factor of 2–3 was observed at pulse durations between 45 and 200 ps. A smaller increase was achieved for positive delays ("post-pulse''), and no improvement for 800-ps pulses.

Notes: A pair of exchange-coupled classical spins with biaxial exchange and single-site anisotropy represents a Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom for which the integrability question is nontrivial. We have found that such a system is completely integrable if the model parameters satisfy a certain condition. For the integrable cases, the second integral of the motion (in addition to the Hamiltonian), which guarantees integrability, is determined explicitly. It can be reconstructed numerically by means of time averages of dynamical variables over all trajectories. In the nonintegrable cases, the existence of the time averages is still guaranteed, but they no longer define an analytic invariant, and their determination is subject to long-time anomalies. Our numerical calculation of time averages for two lines of initial conditions reveals a number of interesting features of such nonanalytic invariants.

Notes: A novel type of ion spectrometer for laser-produced plasma diagnostics is described. The Thomson parabola configuration is used to separate the expanding plasma ions according to their different charge-to-mass ratios. One particular ion species is subsequently collected by a parabola-shaped charge collector. In this way ion velocity distributions of a single charge-to-mass ratio are obtained through simple time-of-flight analysis. Measured ion energies can be as low as 1 keV per nucleon.

Notes: An EPR study with optical detection is reported of the luminescent triplet state of the VO3−4 ion in single crystals of YVO4 and YPO4 doped with VO3−4 . The experiments in an external magnetic field and in zero field can be fitted by a spin Hamiltonian for an orbitally nondegenerate triplet state. Signals originate from four symmetry-related species; the directions of the principal axes of the four ZFS tensors indicate a lowering of symmetry of the VO3−4 ion in accordance with a static Jahn–Teller effect by which the tetrahedron tends to a trigonal pyramid on excitation. For YVO4 the ZFS parameters are: ||D||=0.58±0.04, ||E||=13.72±0.04 GHz, and for YPO4: ||D||=1.12±0.04, ||E||=12.98±0.04 GHz (z axis(parallel)V–O bond and y⊥ac or bc crystallographic plane). For the mixed crystal the lifetimes of the individual spin levels were determined: τx=0.35, τy=3.3, τz=1.4 ms.
