Notes: Traveling-wave Y-fed directional couplers are shown to have a high-frequency bandpass response because of the inherent velocity mismatch between the optical and electrical waves. Furthermore, if their characteristic parameters are suitably chosen, it is possible to achieve an intrinsic resonance by using uniform electrodes. These principles are theoretically investigated and experimentally demonstrated at center frequencies up to 8.5 GHz for titanium indiffused in lithium niobate (Ti:LiNbO3 ) waveguides at 1.3 μm wavelength.

Notes: We present a theoretical analysis of a newly demonstrated semiconductor laser with coupled distributed feedback and Fabry–Perot (DFB-FP) cavities and show that three modes of operation are possible for such a laser. In mode-switched DFB mode, the wavelength can be switched between longitudinal modes on either side of the stopband. In coupled-cavity laser mode, there are successive mode hops inside the stopband. Finally, in continuously tunable distributed Bragg reflector mode, a wide wavelength tuning range (4.8 A(ring)) without mode hopping can be obtained. The analysis is general enough to be applied to any laser with a periodic waveguide section, and provides an understanding of the mechanisms and the limits of wavelength tuning in such lasers. This type of laser has very important applications in coherent optical communications.

Notes: During a period of one year, 119 patients with chronic pain received injections of opioids via a catheter inserted in the lumbar epidural space. Twenty-three patients (19%) showed evidence of tolerance and were given droperidol 1.25–5.0 mg epidurally. In 20 patients in this study, there was a significant reduction in the number of epidural opioid injections. Six patients complained of excessive sedation, which disappeared when the dose of droperidol was reduced, although this did not affect the analgesia. One patient given an accidental overdose of droperidol developed reversible Parkinsonism. It is concluded that epidural administration of the dopamine antagonist droperidol may be beneficial as supplementary medication to epidural opioids when tolerance develops.

Notes: Under drought, CO2 assimilation rates decrease already at small leaf water deficits. At least part of the inhibition is attributed to non-stomata1 effects at the chloroplast level, with electron transport and phosphorylation being main targets of inhibition. These findings are questioned by direct measurements of photosynthetic capacity with systems that are not Limited by stomata, e.g. leaf slices in solution or leaves at ex-ternal CO2 concentrations exceeding 5%. Here, photosynthesis was rather insensitive to dehydration down to 50–70% relative water content, and different plant species re-sponded in a very similar way. More severe dehydration affected not only pboto-synthesis, but also dark CO2 fixation and presumably also photorespiration. Rever-sible and unspecific inhibition is thought to be mediated mainly by increased concen-trations of solutes in dehydrated cells. Inhibition of photorespiration might favour photoinhibition when long-term water stress is coupled with full sunlight. Photo-inhibition, together with general senescence phenomena might be involved in long-term effects of water stress under natural drought conditions. This offers an explanation for the conflicting results of short-term water stress experiments and studies carried out under field conditions.

Notes: Summary Epidermal growth factor (EGF) has been shown to stimulate DNA synthesis and cell division in normal glia. At least half of malignant human gliomas (MHG) express high levels of the EGF receptor (EGFR), which are above those detected in normal brain. The demonstration that antibodies against the EGFR inhibit the growth of squamous cell carcinoma line A-431, with large numbers of EGFR, in vitro and in vivo raises the possibility that these agents could be used therapeutically against malignant human gliomas either alone or conjugated to other agents. We have measured the growth effects of EGF and an anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody, 528 (Ab-528), on four well-characterized human malignant glioma cell lines, D-263 MG, D-247 MG, U-343 MGa Cl 2∶6, and D-37 MG, with 2.9×104, 1.5×105, 8.6×105 and 1.59×106 EGFRs per cell, respectively. EGF significantly increased cell number in D-263 MG and D-37 MG by 65% and 74%, respectively, had no effect on D-247 MG, and significantly decreased cell number in U-343 MGa Cl 2∶6 by 39%. U-343 MGa Cl 2∶6 growth was inhibited 19% by Ab-528, but Ab-528 had no effect on growth of the other MHG lines. Ab-528 significantly inhibited all EGF-mediated growth effects. These studies demonstrate that, although Ab-528 alone has little antiproliferative activity on MGH, it successfully competes with EGF to reduce the biological effects of EGF-EGFR binding. Therefore, this antibody could potentially be used to target radioisotopes to MHG via the EGFR for diagnosis and therapy.

Notes: Summary Five patients, who developed progressive neurological deterioration within hours due to subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) are reported. The computertomographic (CT) appearance of a noncommunicating hydrocephalus (n.c.h.) was a unique feature in 4 cases. CT during the early phase of neurological deterioration after SAH permits the differentiation between an ischaemic, an oedematous, a haemorrhagic-compressive lesion and an increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) due to n.c.h.

Notes: Summary Incubation of the salivary glands of the larvae ofDrosophila hydei in a control medium containing 2×10−3 m cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) induces a considerable increase in passive electrical cel communication. This is caused by a decrease in permeabilty of the nonjunctional membrane part, together with an increase of the permeability of the low-resistance junctions. Similar changes in intercellular communication in the salivary gland ofDrosophila hydei were seen in a majority of experiments in which 10−3 m dibutyryl cycli adenosine monophosphate (dBcAMP), 5×10−3 m theophylline or ecdysterone (100 μg/ml) were added to the control medium. Hyperpolarization of the gland cells can be observed concomitant with the increase in communication. A hypothesis is discussed for a possible molecular regulation of passive electrical cell communication in which the intracellular cAMP level plays a significant part.

Notes: Summary and Conclusions 1. Of 36 patients with general paresis, 18 were treated with penicillin-malaria and 18 with penicillin alone. 2. Choice and methods of treatment, as well as complications, were described. 3. The prognosis in the series presented was found to depend mainly on (a) duration of symptoms, (b) degree of intellectual impairment, (c) type of psychosis, (d) combination with tabes, (e) age. These findings confirm often-reported observations by others. 4. Satisfactory clinical results (much improved and improved) were achieved in 61.1 per cent (11 patients) treated with penicillinmalaria and 27.7 per cent (five patients) treated with penicillin alone. Satisfactory serologic results (available for 33 patients only) were obtained in 94.1 per cent (16 of 17 patients) in the combined group and in 81.2 per cent (13 of 16 patients) in the penicillin-alone group. 5. The clinical failure rate was 22.2 per cent (four patients) for the patients treated with penicillin-malaria and 38.8 per cent (seven patients) for the patients treated with penicillin alone; the serologic failure rate was 5.8 per cent (one of 17 patients) and 18.7 per cent (three of 16 patients) respectively. 6. Some superiority of the combined treatment remains even after allowance has been made for factors rendering the composition of the group treated with penicillin-malaria more favorable. Penicillin alone, however, outranks the combined treatment with regard to safety, lack of complications, and ease of administration.

Notes: Abstract Observations of solar X-ray line emission using crystal spectrometers during a large chromospheric flare have provided a list of wavelengths with a precision of 0.003 Å in first order of diffraction and correspondingly better in higher orders. In addition to the resonance, intersystem (1 1 S 0-2 3 P 1) and forbidden (1 1 S 0-2 3 S 1) transitions of ions of the Hei isoelectronic sequence, we have recorded satellite lines arising from ions in the Lii, Bei and Bi isoelectronic sequences. These satellite features are most prominent in the iron spectrum. Apparent decreases in the ratio of forbidden and intersystem line intensities of Mgxi and Sixiii during the flare are used to derive electron densities possibly as high as 1 × 1013 cm−3 in the Mgxi emitting region and 1 × 1014 cm−3 in the Sixiii region during the event. A search for satellite lines on the long-wavelength side of the Lyman-alpha line of Hi-like ions has yielded no positive identifications.
