    Notes: The hyperfine energy levels of 167Er in Er(OH)3 have been deduced using the crystal field parameters and wave functions obtained from an analysis of the experimental results of magnetic susceptibilities, their anisotropies, and optical absorption spectra of pure Er(OH)3. The hyperfine splitting of the energy levels corresponding to the ground (Ig =7/2) and first excited (Ie =9/2) 79.32-keV nuclear manifolds of 167Er in Er(OH)3 are 0.124 and 0.152 cm−1, respectively. The expected Mössbauer spectra were also predicted. No experimental data is available for comparison. The width of Mössbauer spectra for 166Er in Er(OH)3 was found to be 10.56 mm/s, which is close to the reported value. The Mössbauer spectra of 151Eu(OH)3 was studied between 300 and 4.2 K and the results were compared with the spectra calculated using similar magnetic and optical data of Eu(OH)3. The observed isomer shift (with respect to EuF3) remained temperature independent, having a value of 1.04±0.02 mm/s. The nuclear specific heat (Chf) was calculated for the 151Eu isotope in Eu(OH)3 and it showed a peak at about 0.9 mK. It was observed that Chf varied as 1/T2 between 1 K and 10 mK, which is a property that may be utilized in millikelvin thermometry.

    Notes: The technique of linear digital filtering developed for the computation of standard curves for conventional resistivity and electromagnetic depth soundings is applied to the determination of filter coefficients for the computation of dipole curves from the resistivity transform function by convolution. In designing the filter function from which the coefficients are derived, a sampling interval shorter than the one used in the earlier work on resistivity sounding is found to be necessary. The performance of the filter sets is tested and found to be highly accurate. The method is also simple and very fast in application.

    Notes: Koefoed has given practical procedures of obtaining the layer parameters directly from the apparent resistivity sounding measurements by using the raised kernel function H(λ) as the intermediate step. However, it is felt that the first step of his method—namely the derivation of the H curve from the apparent resistivity curve—is relatively lengthy.In this paper a method is proposed of determining the resistivity transform T(λ), a function directly related to H(λ), from the resistivity field curve. It is shown that the apparent resistivity and the resistivity transform functions are linearily related to each other such that the principle of linear electric filter theory could be applied to obtain the latter from the former. Separate sets of filter coefficients have been worked out for the Schlumberger and the Wenner form of field procedures. The practical process of deriving the T curve simply amounts to running a weighted average of the sampled apparent resistivity field data with the pre-determined coefficients. The whole process could be graphically performed within an quarter of an hour with an accuracy of about 2%.

    Notes: Dipole sounding resistivity measurements over layered earth can be interpreted directly by adapting the procedure given by Koefoed (1968) for Schlumberger system. To carry out the first step of the interpretation leading to the determination of the raised kernel function, partial resistivity functions for the dipole method are derived and given in the form of standard curves. The second step involving the derivation of layering parameters from the kernel being independent of the electrode configurations remains unaltered. The applicability and limitations of the method are discussed.

    Notes: The technique of linear digital filtering as developed for the direct interpretation of Schlumberger and Wenner soundings (Ghosh 1971) has been applied here for the derivation of the resistivity transform function from the field dipole measurements as the first step in directly interpreting dipole data. Filter coefficients for this transformation have been worked out for the radial-polar, perpendicular and parallel (30°) arrays of dipole sounding. The procedure combines speed with accuracy.

    Notes: The computation method described in this paper is based on the existence of a linear relationship between the mutual coupling ratio and the kernel function in the integral expression for it. Accordingly, the mutual coupling ratio can be determined by first computing sample values of the kernel function and then subjecting these to a digital linear filter. In the present paper the appropriate sampling distance is determined and the values of the digital filter coefficients are computed, both for electromagnetic sounding with horizontal coils and for electromagnetic sounding with perpendicular coils.

    Notes: Abstract Ilvaite, Ca(Fe2+, Fe3+)Fe2+Si2O8(OH), a black mixed valence iron silicate shows considerable Fe2+⇄Fe3+ electron delocalization above 400 K, reminiscent of magnetite. A crystallographic phase transition from orthorhombic (Pnam) to monoclinic (P2 1/a) symmetry takes place on cooling at 343 K induced by electron ordering. In both phases, Fe2+ and Fe3+ occur in double octahedral chains parallel to the c axis. The thermal characteristics of the magnetic susceptibilities and their anisotropies in different crystallographic planes have been measured in the temperature range 400−21 K. Below 343±1K, a continuous rotation of the molar susceptibility K ∥ in the ab plane down to 90±2 K is observed, where the symmetry of the magnetic ellipsoid remains unchanged. X a, X b and X c increase abruptly below 123±0.5 K, although antiferromagnetic ordering of Fe2+ and Fe3+ spins on A sites was suggested in previous Mössbauer and neutron powder diffraction studies. In addition, 1/X a shows an antiferromagnetic maximum at 50±3 K, whereas 1/X b and 1/X c at first increase sharply below 123 K, followed by antiferromagnetic curvatures in the lowest temperature region. This behavior is consistent with the antiferromagnetic ordering of Fe2+ spins in the B sites. The observed magnetic phenomena suggest charge delocatization effects between adjacent Fe2+(A)-Fe3+(A) pairs not only along c, but also along a and b directions. The negative sign of the molar anisotropy (K ∥-K⊥) suggests a singlet ground State 5A1 for the Fe2+ ions, in agreement with previous Mössbauer studies.
