Notes: Summary The number of melanin-containing and melanin-free nerve cells in the substantia nigra was determined in 10 brains with paralysis agitans and in 10 control brains, both groups from subjects with the same average age. The total count in the brains with paralysis agitans was shown to be 59% less than the total count in the control brains, the melanin-containing cell count being 66% less and the melanin-free cell count being 39% less than the corresponding cell counts in the controls. In this material, therefore, it was not possible to demonstrate the so-called extra-nigral type of paralysis agitans. It is emphasized that previous findings (functional changes in the nerve cells of the globus pallidus) make it necessary to consider parkinsonism as a multifactorial problem.

Notes: The addition of very small amounts of carefully selected polymers by melt blending has been found to radically change the flow properties at spinning of conventional polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate, nylon 66, and polypropylene. This has a large effect on spun properties, especially at high wind-up speeds. The additive polymers used have included liquid crystal polymers, polyethlene, polyethylene glycol, and nylon 66. A major phenomen is a considerable lowering of spun orientation, or wind-up speed suppression. In order to activate the non-liquid crystal polymers to achieve this effect special spinning conditions are necessary. The mechanism is viewed as being nonuniform extensional flow in a two-phase system and not molecular interaction.

Notes: The laser Raman scattering from calcified regions of diseased cardiovascular tissue samples dissected from the coronary arteries and aortic valves was measured. The spectra reveal the characteristic vibrational features of the phosphate grouping in the solid state. Spectral features for the calcified artery segments and aortic valves are compared for details of the chemical and structural makeup of the calcific lesions.
