Notes: Acute myelomonocytic leukaemia developed in a patient with psoriasis treated with oral 8–methoxypsoralen and longwave ultraviolet light (PUVA). The possibility that PUVA may induce haematological malignancies by damaging the DNA of cirulating multipotential haemopoietic stem cells is discussed. We advise increased attention to the haemopoietic system of patients treated with PUVA.

Notes: Extramammary Paget's disease remains a difficult clinical diagnosis and, though biopsy readily establishes the presence of a tumour with an intraepidermal spread, this needs further study so that other tumours with a similar pattern of spread may be excluded. We advocate the use of a panel of readily available peroxidase-labelled antisera to cell markers and antigens in addition to conventional special stains to achieve this purpose. The disease often extends beyond the clinically abnormal area and an underlying sweat gland carcinoma may be present: this was so in five of the six cases presented. Wide surgical excision with a check on limits of clearance is recommended.

Notes: [Auszug] The equipment comprised a photomultiplier type FW 130 ($20) feeding pulses to a bank of ten sealers which were activated in turn for one-tenth of the pulsar period. Although this gave only limited resolution of the pulse shape, it was adequate for the purpose and had advantages in detecting ...

Notes: Abstract In order to detect the gravitational effect of the dark corona component of disk galaxies, it is necessary to have surface photometry and rotation data that extend well beyond three disk-scale lengths. Such data exists now for several pure disk galaxies. There is very strong evidence for dark coronas in these galaxies. It has been possible to estimate the scale length and density for their dark components, which can be well represented as isothermal spheres. The pure disk galaxies that have been studied so far have absolute magnitudes in the range −17〉M B〉−19.5. It would be very interesting to know whether the fainter dwarf irregular galaxies (which are also disk systems) have dark coronas: are these coronas necessary for disk galaxies to form?

Notes: [Auszug] "MITOCHONDRIA can be seen to swell, coil, branch, fragment, coalesce, put out pseudopods, even to get tied in knots. They can change their form until they resemble bubbles, strings of beads, dumb-bells, lemons or snow-shoes" (Ritchie and Hazeltine, 1953). Despite this variability in form, ...

Notes: [Auszug] The spectrum is quite unlike that of the Sco X-1 optical candidate1. It has, however, features in common with the central star of the planetary nebula NGG 5189, which has been suggested as an optical identification for the X-ray source Cen XR-2 (ref. 2). A spectrogram, taken by L. Searle, of this ...

Notes: Abstract Shell length and electrophoretic heterozygosity at six enzyme loci were scored in juveniles of 30 hatchery-grown families and in adults of 10 field-grown families of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis. A total of 4 809 offspring were scored. We found no consistent pattern in the correlations between shell length and enzyme heterozygosity among sibs within families. However, a significant family effect on shell length was observed, suggesting an influence of background genotype on this character. A family effect on viability was also observed. When the environment and family effects were accounted for, a small positive correlation between heterozygosity and shell length at the juvenile stage remained. This correlation was significant in one of the three experiments. No such correlation was evident at the adult stage. Our interpretation of these results is that electrophoretic alleles appear to have no direct of independent effect of their own on growth. We suggest that the negative correlation of homozygosity with these characters, seen in natural populations, results from homozygosity for hidden recessive deleterious genes with which the electromorphs are in a steady state of quasilinkage disequilibrium.

Notes: Abstract We report results of a detailed study of the nearby blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 1705. There are two stellar populations in NGC 1705: an underlying population around a Gyr old or older, and a young population of fairly continuous star formation for the last 250 Myr. An off-centre nucleus, which is probably a young (10 Myr old), massive (106 M ⊙) globular cluster, is part of this young population. The Hα morphology and emission line kinematics are consistent with an expulsive flow triggered by the formation of the nucleus. We show that NGC 1705 is losing ionized material in this galactic wind with neutral material probably entrained in the flow. This flow may lead to total removal of the ISM. The evolutionary fate of NGC 1705 is uncertain but the most likely outcome is rapid evolution into a nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy.
