    Notes: Magnetization has been measured as a function of in-plane applied field and temperature by measuring the spin polarization of low-energy electrons (LEESPA) excited from the surface by an unpolarized electron beam (Ep=2 keV). These extremely surface sensitive data (probing 〈25 A(ring)), taken on surfaces characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy, are compared with results obtained by magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE probing 〈250 A(ring)) and bulk magnetometry. The LEESPA M-H loops show considerably lower remanence than MOKE indicating appreciable surface anisotropy. The LEESPA polarization approaches zero at approximately TC =170 °C for both the Co and Fe base alloys with less curvature than bulk magnetization does. The bulk TC's are 20 °C higher than those measured by LEESPA.

    Notes: In this paper experiments with weak shocks in carbon dioxide are described. The incident shocks were arranged to reflect off the sloping surfaces of rigid ramps of various corner angles. Regular and Mach reflectionlike phenomena were observed, but because the incident shocks were so weak, all the waves in the reflecting systems showed evidence of either partial or complete dispersion. Consequently, the wave systems were different from the classical perfect gas theory systems described by the von Neumann theory. These wave systems were named "dispersed irregular reflections.''

    Notes: Abstract Twenty healthy adult humans had serum samples drawn on four occasions within a 24-hr period: after a 12 hr overnight fast, 4–5 hr after a high fat breakfast, at midafternoon, and the next morning after another 12 hr fast. Nonfasting samples had 22% to 29% higher mean concentrations (p 〈 0.05) than did fasting samples for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, 4.81 vs 3.74 ng/g serum wt), hexachlorobenzene (HCB, 0.163 vs 0.134 ng/g serum wt), andp,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p′-DDE, 6.74 vs 5.37 ng/g serum wt) measured by electron capture gas liquid chromatography. Total serum lipids were estimated from measurements of total cholesterol, free cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids and were 20% higher in nonfasting samples than in fasting samples (7.05 g/L vs 5.86 g/L). When PCBs, HCB, andp,p′-DDE concentrations were corrected by total serum lipids, results from fasting and nonfasting samples were not statistically different. Because of the differences in these chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations observed with different sample collection regimens, meaningful comparison of analytical results requires standardizing collection procedures or correcting by total serum lipid levels.

    Notes: A rapid method for determining the reactivity of murine monoclonal antibodies with apolipoprotein A-I (Apo A-I) isoforms has been developed. The method consists of a rapid (1-2 h) prescreening of fusion well culture fluids by using an automated immunofluorescent assay (IF A) to identify fusion well cultures producing monoclonal antibody against Apo A-I and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Immediately following the IFA procedure, immunodetection of the reactivity pattern of selected fusion well culture fluids is determined by using transblotted isoforms of Apo A-I previously separated by isoelectric focusing. Strips are prepared and stored at 4 °C in protein containing blocking solution before use. Preselected culture fluids could be tested within 6 h for qualitative reactivity with Apo A-I isoforms. Using this procedure we selected several monoclonal antibody-producing cultures for further studies on HDL metabolism based on their differing reactivities with Apo A-I isoforms. This technique should be easily transferable to other laboratories for assessing proteins having multiple isoforms since the crucial steps of separation and blotting can be optimized and performed before actual testing for antibody reactivity.
