Notes: Abstract: The originally described sequence of human myelin basic protein peptide 45–89 has recently been shown to contain two errors which have now been resolved. In the present study fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry was utilized to analyze the primary sequence of the other portions, peptides 1–44 and 90–170 of human myelin basic protein. The results obtained confirm the accuracy of the primary sequence published for both of these terminal peptides.

Notes: Electromigration was studied in Al conductors underlaid with chemically vapor deposited W, and the results compared to the more conventional Al/TiW metallization. In Al/TiW conductors electromigration results in Al whisker growth, causing metal short rather than open-circuit failure. Contrary to expectations, the Al/W metallization was found to be more susceptible to the formation of whiskers during current stress, with Al/W lifetimes reduced by about one-half compared with Al/TiW. The temperature and current density failure dependencies were not significantly affected by the composition of the underlayer. The mechanical stress in the underlayer was not found to significantly affect the stress distribution in the overlying Al film.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract A method for the determination of selenium in food and biological materials has been developed. The method involves sample decomposition in a closed system at 150 °C with nitric acid, perchloric acid treatment of the digest, reduction of selenium to the tetravalent state with hydrochloric acid followed by Se-2,3-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) complex formation and extraction in a single-step operation. Performance characteristics of the method (accuracy and repeatability) were extensively tested for eleven reference materials and ten practice samples covering both a wide variety of matrices and a wide range of selenium content. Almost all results for reference materials were within the 95% confidence range of the certified value or the best estimate thereof. The coefficient of variation for all samples ranged from 2.3 to 10.1%, average value 4.7%. Average recovery for spiking experiments — levels 0.060, 0.075 and 0.150 gm/g was 102%; range 84–114%.

Notes: Abstract A result of experimental investigations of magnetic domain pattern was, simply said, that the domains are always aranged in such a way, that magnetic stray-fields are avoided everywhere, and only easy directions are occupied by the magnetization. This is true for domains in the bulk of the specimen as well as for the surface. This result — which may be described by two basic rules for magnetic domains — will now be derived theoretically. The idea is to examine the stability of an arbitrary volume with respect to a certain variation of the magnetization; the variation leads two what may be called an incomplete Bloch-wall. It results from the calculation, that in a ferromagnetic crystal every volume element, which is homogenously magnetized and large as compared to the thickness of a Bloch-wall, can be looked at as more or less independently variable. The basic rules follow from this argument. The range of validity, the significance and possible applications of our rules are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Results are reported for an inter-laboratory test conducted to assess precision (repeatability, reproducibility) and accuracy of a collaborative method for the fluorimetric determination of selenium (Se). The seven participating laboratories analysed one test solution, four samples of milk powder and two samples of freeze-dried bovine liver. Each set of samples comprised three duplicates: two colorant-disguised milk powders and one code disguised freeze-dried bovine liver. Two of the milk powders were enriched with 90.7 μg/kg Se as seleno-dl-methionine. One set of results had to be rejected because the laboratory involved did not adhere to the collaborative method. Results from a second laboratory contained both stragglers and outliers. The five remaining laboratories performed the method satisfactory. Results from these laboratories were statistically evaluated according to ISO 5725. The average coefficient of variation within a laboratory (repeatability) was 4.8% and between laboratories (reproducibility) 6.0% for the milk powder and bovine liver samples. Recovery for the test solution, target value 120 μg Se/1, was 96% and the average recovery for the Se enriched milk powder was 88%. The mean result for the milk powder was 98.9 μg/kg (n=10), coefficient of variation (CV) 6.7%, and for Se enriched milk powder 178.3 μg/kg, coefficient of variation (CV) 3.6%. For freeze-dried bovine liver, these results were 238.4 μg/kg and 4.1 % respectively.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A 1-year stability study of ampouled polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) solutions was carried out. Two solutions of seven pure PAHs were prepared, one in acetonitrile and one in toluene, and ampouled. Solutions were tested for mass concentration and impurities before and after ampouling. No differences were found. After 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, three ampoules were selected for analysis from the acetonitrile and the toluene lots stored at +20° and at −20 °C. The acetonitrile solution was analysed by high performance liquid chromatography and the toluene solution by glass capillary gas chromatography. The results demonstrate that both solutions were stable and no contamination. occurred during storage.

Notes: Abstract Hypersensitivity reactions occurring during barium studies of the gastrointestinal tract are rare. A case is presented with radiographically demonstrated angioedema in the stomach and small bowel accompanied by allergic rhinitis, which was apparently an allergic response to the barium sulfate suspension. The reaction was documented twice during separate challenges to the barium suspension performed several months apart.

Notes: Abstract A report of two patients in which a soft tissue mass, initially regarded as a malignant tumor, was shown to be the result of calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease. The first case, a woman aged 71 years, presented with a mass involving the right fifth finger. In the second case, also a women aged 71 years, the lesion involved the tissues adjacent to the right hip. Each lesion consisted of a mass of highly cellular tissue containing deposits of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals. the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of the two cases are compared with those of seven similar cases reported in the literature.

Notes: Summary A graphics display-oriented method for the computer-aided interpretation of the mass spectrum of a peptide in terms of its amino acid sequence is presented. The spectrum is obtained by collision induced decomposition of the protonated molecular ion (M+H)+ of the peptide generated by fast atom bombardment in the first double focussing mass analyzer of a tandem mass spectrometer and the product ion mass spectrum (CID spectrum) recorded by the second double focussing mass analyzer. The algorithm displays all series of peaks differing by the mass of -NH-CHR-CO- for the various amino acids. This display, which is very fast and can be augmented through interrogation by the user, greatly facilitates the determination of the amino acid sequence. The method is demonstrated on the spectra of a undecapeptide of (M+H)+ m/z = 1208.2 and a tetradecapeptide of (M+H)+ m/z = 1758.9.
