Notes: Two types of discontinuities are considered in conjunction with the conservation laws: those that arise from a limit of finite and differentiable functions in a boundary layer and those that do not. It is shown that the former, which prevail in electromagnetism, do not play a role in the conservation laws, but the situation in other areas of physics, such as general relativity, may be more complex. A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the first type of discontinuity is derived. For the second type, the conservation laws are no longer of the conventional form.

Notes: Optical delay times and pulse widths of five Ar:Xe laser lines have been measured as a function of the total gas pressure. Both the delay time and the pulse width appeared to be almost linearly dependent on the inverse gas pressure. For a total gas pressure of 14 bars the delay times were around 100 ns, at a total gas pressure of 1 bar the laser output typically appeared after 1–3 μs.

Notes: Superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3O7 ("123'') films were fabricated on the Y2BaCuO5 ("211'') phase substrate. The superconducting characteristics of these films, in terms of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and width, are better than those using other oxide compounds as substrates. In addition, using high-temperature processing, the bulk 211 phase was converted into the 123 phase. A new high Tc copper oxide material with non-rare-earth elements (Bi-Sr-Cu-O) was prepared using similar high-temperature processing. High-temperature processing presents an alternative synthetic route in the search of new high Tc superconductors.

Notes: Samples of YBa2 Cu3Ox doped with silver oxide (Tc ∼93 K) have exhibited attractive forces in gradient magnetic fields, both normal and tangential to the surfaces, which are more than twice the sample weight. This allows sample suspension below a rare earth magnet. Critical current density was increased by ∼102 at 77 K. Persistent fields, flux pinning, magnetization, and modeling are described.

Notes: Abstract The disease course and therapy of a nine-and-a-half-year-old boy with hyperphenylalaninemia due to a dihydropteridine reductase deficiency are reported. Clinically, there is a marked mental retardation and complex basal ganglion symptoms. The cranial computed tomographic investigation shows bilateral, symmetrical, comma-shaped calcifications in the globus pallidus and the putamen of the lentiform nucleus. The cause of these basal ganglion calcifications remains unclear. Lowering of serum and CSF folic acid levels could not be detected, in contrast to cases with the same enzyme defect described previously.

Notes: Abstract Optimizations of gas composition and input energy were performed for gas mixtures containing a buffer gas and either Ar, Kr or Xe as the lasing gas. The total gas pressure was varied between 1 and 14 bar and the input energy from 0.03 to 0.7 J/cm3. The excitation source was a small coaxial electron beam with a pumping length of 20 cm and a pulse length of 30 ns (FWHM). From an active volume of 13.3 cm3 a maximum output energy of 12 mJ was obtained from a gas mixture containing 0.3% Xe in Ar at a total gas pressure of 10 bar. The intrinsic efficiency was 0.9%.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the output energy, the optical pulse length and the build-up time of the laser pulse, obtained with a coaxially e-beam pumped KrF* laser, were performed varying the total gas fill pressure, the F2 content and the e-beam current from 1–5 bar, 0.1–0.8% and 13.3–26.6 kA, respectively. The maximum specific extraction energy amounts to 64 J/l. The large range of measurements, especially at low F2 concentrations, reveals the necessity to extend the kinetics of the F2 chain in the usual computer model. With the introduction of electron quenching of KrF* and ArF* by dissociative attachment the predictions are also for low F2 concentration in agreement with experiments.

Description / Table of Contents: Cross-ply Cracking in 0/90/0 CFRP LaminatesCross-ply cracking in carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) with thermoset as well as thermoplastic matrix systems was investigated on 0/90/0 laminates with varying 90°-ply thickness. Since in an angle ply laminate the 90°-ply fails first, the higher strength of the other plies cannot be taken advantage of. For this reason efforts have to be done to increase the transverse strength (strain) of fibre reinforced plastics. In the first place thus it is necessary to investigate the influence of the different parameters which contribute to the transverse strength. In this work the influence of matrix (fracture strain), fibre/matrix interface, voids and constraining effect of neighbouring plies is investigated. With the aid of two-parameter Weibull distributions of the 90°-ply fracture strain, which describe the phenomenon of multiple cracking in a specimen, it was found that the constraining effect due to neighbouring plies, improved fibre/matrix interface and matrix ductilty increase, whereas voids decrease the transverse fracture strain.
