Notes: Resistivity measurements were carried out in a survey area in the south of Germany. This area is characterized by complicated subsurface geology. Schlumberger full-arrays and their respective half-arrays were recorded simultaneously. The results obtained by the one-dimensional (1D) interpretation of the full-array measurements were incorrect because of a resistivity discontinuity. This discontinuity, under a relatively thick overburden, could only be located by the half-array soundings. Its exact location and the resistivity distribution in the subsurface were ascertained by comparing the sounding curves with 2D model curves, which are calculated by a finite-difference method.

Notes: Gradient measurements in a homogeneous electrical primary field can easily be interpreted for simple models. The simplified solution (conducting or resistant body in a homogeneous space in a homogeneous electrical field) is often sufficiently accurate, as comparisons with the exact solution (body of finite resistivity in a homogeneous half-space in a quasihomogeneous electrical field) show. The exact geometry of the body cannot be determined by gradient measurements; the same anomaly of apparent resistivity can be caused by different bodies. In particular, the similarity between a sphere and a cube of the same volume is very high. There is a distinct influence of the resistivity of the overburden: the higher this resistivity is, the stronger is the effect caused by a buried body.If a deviation of 10% of the apparent resistivity is assumed as the lower boundary at which a buried body can be detected by gradient measurements, the depth of investigation for a three-dimensional body is approximately equal to its width; in the two-dimensional case the thickness of the overburden can be twice the width. If the overburden has a resistivity which is higher than the resistivity of the substratum, these depths are greater. The greatest possible depth is approximately three times the width of the body.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Aqueous solutions of iodine complexes with starch, different samples of amylose or amylopectin show an induced positive Cotton effect in the region of the absorption maximum. The rotatory power and the extinction at 660 and 445 mμ depends upon iodine amylose ratio. The optical of some complexes increases with time, whereas the absorption remains constant. Experimental conditions which change the structure of the channel complexe (heating, addition of salts, solvents, urea or detergents) influence the induced Cotton effect.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical model of pulse propagation through single-mode fibres is presented taking into account the combined action of self-phase modulation, stimulated Raman-scattering and the group velocity mismatch between pump and Stokes pulses. Due to the walk-off of Stokes and laser light an asymmetric pump pulse depletion resulting in considerable reshaping of laser pulses and an asymmetric self-phase modulation spectrum can be calculated and experimentally verified. A maximum laser power is found to be transferable through the fibre.

Notes: Summary The appearance rate of antipyrine in intestinal venous blood was measured in anesthetized rats during perfusion (0.2 ml/min) of a buffered solution with 1 mmol/l labeled antipyrine through a jejunal, ileal, or colonic segment (length: 2–5 cm). When the blood flow rate was increased from 0.9–1.2 to 1.6–2.0 ml min−1 g−1 by raising the systemic blood pressure from 80 to 130 mm Hg, the absorption of antipyrine increased only in the colon. Stepwise reduction of the blood flow rate from 1.4–1.7 to 0.2–0.3 or stepwise raise from 0.2–0.3 to 1.4 ml min−1 g−1 by constriction or release of the mesenteric artery decreased or increased the absorption rate of antipyrine. The relation between absorption and flow rate can be described by curves which ascend at low and level off into a horizontal section at high flow rates. At the same blood flow rate the regional absorption rate decreased in the order jejunum, ileum, and colon with the largest step between ileum and colon. Model analysis yielded the following results for jejunum, ileum, and colon, respectively: permeability-surface area product 0.083, 0.074, and 0.037 ml min−1 g−1; fraction of absorptive site blood flow rate 0.24, 0.19, 0.08. The differences can be attributed mainly to the change of the surface area from jejunum to ileum and colon.

Notes: Abstract The most important spinal disorders in childhood are malformations and mass lesions. The sonographic appearance of the various kinds of dysraphism and their differentiation, of malformations at the cranio-cervical junction, and of mass lesions is demonstrated and illustrated. Based on our preliminary experience, spinal sonography appears to be useful as the first imaging device for the differentiation of complex malformations and as a screening method for occult dysraphism. In mass lesions spinal sonography is useful to diagnose and follow-up disease, with additional imaging procedures currently needed for confirmation of diagnosis.

Notes: Abstract We report on our results of ultrasonography of the infant hip over 2 years. Twenty-three percent of patients with abnormal sonogram showed no clinical suggestion of hip disorder. Suspicion of dislocation based on mobility, asymmetrical trochanteric distance, click or snapping of the hip and inhibited abduction were the most useful clinical criteria predicting disease in 93%, 19% and 16%, respectively. Breech presentation and family history of hip dysplasia or dislocation were important anamnestic data (21% and 16% predictive value, respectively). The significantly shorter duration of therapy in early detected dislocation or dysplasia makes the need for early diagnosis of these disorders obvious. Special emphasis lies on the physiological maturation of the acetabulum and the femoral ossification center. Normal ranges of important diagnostic criteria and angles depending on chronological age are presented.

Notes: Abstract Operation of a wavelength tunable fiber grating Raman laser working in the 1.1 μm regime is demonstrated. The pumping mechanism utilizes the process of stimulated perpendicular Raman scattering, possible in fibers for which birefringence can compensate dispersion. A total tuning range of 40 nm with a minimum output pulse duration of 0.8 ps is achieved by using two optical fibers and controlling their birefringence thermally.
