Notes: Summary Lactate concentrations in the pleural fluid and plasma of 57 patients with pleural effusions were measured by an enzymatic method. The mean pleural fluid lactate concentrations were significantly higher in patients with empyemas and rheumatoid arthritis than in patients with tuberculosis, cancer, non-specific pleural effusions and congestive heart failure. Pleural fluid lactate concentrations correlated significantly with pleural fluid lactate dehydrogenase activities and inversely with pleural fluid glucose concentrations. An elevated pleural fluid lactate concentration is not diagnostic for empyema, as most patients with rheumatoid arthritis and some with tuberculosis and cancer also show high values.

Notes: Abstract Solutions of Pb2+ at ppb to ppm levels were tagged with210Pb and then counted from time to time over a period of one year to measure the extent of container adsorption. All count rates for samples which were acidified with HNO3 were at least 90% of their initial values, even after one year of storage. Amber glass containers proved to be superior to polypropylene for 0.1 and 1.0 ppm Pb2+ solutions; but below 0.1 ppm, polypropylene was superior. For non-acidified samples, the count rate dropped rapidly within the first two months, and then declined more gradually thereafter, with polypropylene generally superior.

Notes: In chemical process control, the application of an optimal control strategy, dictated by the theory of the linear quadratic problem, does not always guarantee the best process performance. The main problem is that the unspecified weighting matrices in the quadratic performance index have a pronounced effect on the optimal control law derived from linear quadratic theory. In the past, values of the weighting matrices have been selected by experimenting with the process in much the same manner as a PID controller is tuned. The objective of the present study is to resolve the inverse problem of optimal regulator control, limiting the performance index in the quadratic form with two independent weighting matrices which are investigated. A new criterion has been developed such that the computation of determining those matrices can be carried out off-line in advance, and then stored in a computer for real-time use.

Notes: Summary Many important functional coatings are realized by advanced coating technology in almost any kind of industry. To meet that goal, innumerable coating techniques and coating materials have been developed and are in use. By varying coating and substrate material, an almost unlimited potential exists in the case of plasma spraying and its process variants, which has to be regarded as the most important coating technique. To meet increasing requirements in coating performance, there has also been an increase in the importance of analytical techniques in coating production. The dominant areas of analytical methods which arise in the case of plasma spraying are characterization of coating materials, spray process control and coating characterization as well as cases of coating failures. To meet these requirements in analyzing, many analytical techniques are available and their use is a must in coating technology.
