Notes: Summary Dermal and respiratory exposure to pirimiphosmethyl, dimethoate and permethrin were determined for applicators and operators in greenhouse tomato spraying operations. Dermal exposure is several times higher than the degree of respiratory exposure. Dermal exposure in terms of different parts of the body shows significant differences. For applicators the exposure of hands, arms and legs is the greatest, and the operators are the most exposed on their hands and to a small extent on legs. This fact should be taken into account when providing the workers with suitable protective clothing. The carefully selected technology of spraying also has great significance in decreasing the degree of exposure. Because of the chronic toxicity of dimethoate, all possible methods should be taken to reduce exposure.

Notes: Abstract Highly purified nuclear and cytoplasmic RNAs were obtained from Tetrahymena thermophila BVII containing only a minimal amount of cross-contamination. In the nuclear RNA fraction we have detected at least 6 distinct snRNAs. Some of the RNA species showed microheterogeneity. SnRNAs of Tetrahymena thermophila are very similar to rat snRNAs, as far as length is concerned. Our cytoplasmic small RNA fraction contained two RNAs, 7S and T7, reported recently (18) as nuclear, particularly nucleolar RNAs. Moreover, we could detect only one cytoplasmic small RNA species Tc1, Tc2 was not observed. Neither the nuclear nor the cytoplasmic small RNA species are degradation products of ribosomal RNA as was shown by Northern blotting and following hybridization with pGY17 containing the entire transcribed region of the ribosomal DNA of Tetrahymena thermophila.

Notes: The mechanism associated with mold filling in the manufacture of structural RIM (SRIM) and resin transfer molding (RTM) composites is studied by means of flow visualization and pressure drop measurements. To facilitate this study, an acrylic mold with a variable cavity was constructed and the flow patterns of nonreactive fluid flowing through various layers, types, and combinations of preplaced glass fiber reinforcement mats were photographed for both evacuated and nonevacuated molds. The pressure drops in the flow through a single type of reinforcement (e.g., a continuous strand random fiber mat) and also a combination of reinforcement types (e.g., a stitched bidirectional mat in combination with a random fiber mat) were recorded at various flow rates to simulate high-speed feeding processes (e.g., SRIM) and low-speed feeding processes (e.g., RTM). By changing the amount of reinforcement placed into the mold, the permeabilities of the different types and combinations of glass fiber mats were obtained as a function of porosity. It is shown that partially evacuating the mold cavity decreases the size of bubbles or voids in the liquid, but ultimately increases the maximum pressure during filling. The results also show that glass fiber mats exhibit anisotropic permeabilities with the thickness permeability, Kz, being extremely important and often the determining factor in the pressure generated in the mold during filling.
