Summary Authors investigated myoneural synapses of the tetanic and tonic part of the iliofibular muscle of the frog. The cholinesterase activity was demonstrated by means of the Koelle-Gerebtzoff method; the myelin sheaths were stained with Sudan black. For the estimation of the enzyme activity a combined microphotometric and planimetric procedure was used. It could be established that the subneural apparatuses of the tetanic muscle fibres correspond to the palisadelike lamellar structures exerting an intensive enzyme activity already previously described byCouteaux, whereas on the tonic muscle fibres one can exclusively find grapelike subneural apparatuses showing a far less strong cholinesterase activity. Dependence of the different types of subneural apparatuses on the âlargeâ or âsmallâ nerve systems (Kuffler) respectively, was demonstrated not only through their topographic localisation, but also with calibre determinations of the corresponding motoric nerve fibres. On the basis of the results the relation between the contraction type and the intensity of the enzyme activity, as well as the morphological assumption of the so-called ânonpropagating impulsesâ is discussed.
