Notes: Summary Whey could be anaerobically digested at space loadings up to 36 kg COD/m3·d in an upflow digester containing porous clay beads for immobilization of microorganisms. In a parallel fermenter without immobilization a space loading of only 8 kg/m3·d was reached. The start-up time was very much reduced by the support material. The COD-reduction in both reactors was 95% and volatile fatty acids in the effluent were below 10 mmol/l. During the digestion of whey a thick layer of Methanothrix soehngenii and occasionally Methanobrevibacter arboriphilus was immobilized on the clay beads. The Methanothrix soehngenii layer disappeared, when whey permeate was fed. Methanosarcina spec. became the predominant acetotrophic methanogen, probably due to the lower pH resulting from digestion of whey permeate. Methanosarcina spec., however, was suspended and only occasionally trapped in the pores of the clay beads. No significant adhesion of other bacteria occurred. In a chemostat a consortium of 5 isolates from digested whey and a strain of Methanosarcina barkeri was able to degrade all components of whey, although at a slightly lower conversion rate than by the complex natural consortium. The total population in the whey digester was more than twice as numerous as that in the whey permeate digester. The lower number of acetotrophic methanogens seemed to be the rate-limiting step in the whey permeate digester and seemed to be responsible for the lower overall conversion rates.

Notes: Summary Fibre density and amplitudes of macro-EMG motor unit potentials were studied and compared with conventional EMG in the anterior tibial muscles from 51 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The fibre density was increased in 46 muscles. Increased amplitudes of macro-EMG motor unit action potentials were found in 46 muscles, while the mean duration of motor unit potentials recorded with a concentric needle electrode was prolonged in only 26 muscles. Changes in the packing density of muscle fibres of surviving motor units are thought to influence the different electrophysiological parameters in different ways.

Notes: Summary Vestibular responses (vertigo, nystagmus-like eye movements) to acoustic stimuli are known as the “Tullio phenomenon”. Detailed electro-oculographic analysis of this reaction, as observed in a 30-year-old patient, revealed the following: a maximum amplitude of eye movement (mainly vertical) was achieved by sine wave bursts of high intensity, a frequency of 500 to 1000 Hz and a duration of 100 ms. The ocular deviation was composed of a fast initial component, followed by a slower resetting movement that was often divided into two parts of different velocities. At longer stimulus durations (more than 100 ms) the electro-oculagram showed a fractionation of the eye deviation, terminating in an “off-response”. Various positions of the patient's head influenced the direction of the eye motion. The possibility that the Tullio phenomenon may be due to an abnormal excitation of the statolith organs is discussed.

Notes: Summary The authors examined 40 rectum specimens by angiography, preparation and staining methods to show the exact arterial vessel supply of the rectum and tried to find out whether a reason could be found for the relatively high rate of suture leaks after low resection of the rectum or not. The insertion of the levator muscle is a sort of vessel divide: caudal to the levator muscle the inferior rectal artery is the main supplying vessel, cranially the superior rectal artery. Here a vessel deficient-area always remains in the dorso-caudal sector of the rectal ampulla which cannot be compensated by another rectum-supplying vessel. The middle rectal artery supplies the rectum accessorily. The results are able to explain why the suture leaks are constantly observed in the dorso-caudal ampulla after profound anterior resection of the rectum. Furthermore the results account for the good healing tendency of coloanal anastomoses: the inferior rectal artery amply supplies the anal canal; there is not the same vesseldeficient area as found cranial to the levator muscle.

Notes: Abstract Deviations of nuclear magnetic moments of oddA nuclei from the Schmidt lines are explained by configuration mixing. The general results obtained are applied to several nuclei and the magnitudes of the admixture coefficients necessary to explain the deviations are estimated. The results show that the deviations can be successfully explained only for those nuclei, in which possible configuration admixtures give contributions to the magnetic moment linear in the admixture coefficient.

Notes: Abstract Histological, electron microscopic and morphometric data on sural nerve, muscle, and skin biopsies of three patients affected by autosomal dominant hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type II with neurofilament accumulation, whose neurological, cardiological and electrophysiological data have been provided in a previous paper disclosed focally enlarged myelinated axons, due to aggregation of neurofilaments in sural nerves of all 3 biopsied patients, as well as densely packed clusters of filaments in occasional non-myelinated axons without axonal enlargement, in several fibroblasts and endothelial cells in muscle and particularly in skin. This accumulation of filaments was less pronounced in our patients' tissues than in autosomal-recessive GAN. No ultrastructural differences concerning the accumulated filaments appear to exist between the affected cells of our patients and GAN. Taken together, these findings best fit a hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type II with focal accumulation of intra-axonal neurofilaments.
