Notes: The response characteristics of palladium-gate metal-insulator-silicon field-effect transistor (MISFET) structures to hydrogen are shown to be logarithmically related to the partial pressure of the gas. It is proposed that these palladium-gate MIS structures should be considered as electrochemical devices where the metal/insulator structure behaves as a gas electrode. The results presented were obtained for hydrogen in air and therefore relate directly to the use of these devices as sensors for use in the ambient environment.

Notes: The NOVA laser has completed its first year of operation. During this period, emphasis has been placed on activation of the facility and of the numerous target and beam diagnostics. Two separate target chambers are in use. NOVA operation is separated into two broad functions: laser operations and experiments. The operations group provides the laser system control, operation, and data acquisition and the experiments group provides experiment definition, diagnostic instrumentation, and overall data processing. On the operations side, VAX 11/780 computers are used to set up diagnostic operating parameters and collect data recorded by the CAMAC and CCD modules. These data are delivered in files by electronic link to the Laser Experiments and Analysis Facility (LEAF) VAX 11/785 of the experiments group for processing. Film data are digitized at LEAF and the film data files are also processed on the LEAF VAX. The LEAF provides collection, processing, analysis, and archiving of the experimental data. The many applications software packages written for LEAF provide the experimental physicists and NOVA operations staff with programs and data bases for interpretation of experimental results. This software makes fundamental use of the ORACLE relational data base management system to both access the required data and archive the obtained results. Post-shot data processing produces sets of scalar values, x, y profiles and x, y, z contour data. The scalar data are stored in the ORACLE DB; the more extensive results are stored in binary files on disk. All data forms are accessed by a comprehensive software system, the electronic SHOTBOOK, developed around the ORACLE DBMS. This software also provides the means to archive relevant data about each experimental activity and allows the physicists to annotate displayed experimental results with technical comment.

Notes: We have used reactive metal interlayers to suppress anion outdiffusion at Au-CdTe junctions and thereby to alter the formation of deep interfacial states. Using soft x-ray photoemission and luminescence spectroscopies, we report a dramatically reduced p-type band bending and demonstrate that deep levels observed directly at the interface are responsible for the chemically induced electrical behavior.

Notes: We have used soft x-ray photoemission and optical emission spectroscopies to observe a broad range of Fermi level stabilization energies at metal interfaces with GaAs(100) surfaces grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The observed metal- and As-related interface cathodoluminescence plus orders-of-magnitude differences in bulk-defect-related photoluminescence between melt- versus MBE-grown GaAs suggest a role of bulk crystal growth and processing in controlling Schottky barrier formation.

Notes: Summary A survey of remedial teaching based on a particular method and carried out in an NHS clinic over 2 years has been presented. The findings suggest a differential pattern of improvement both for reading and spelling as well as for type of learning difficulty, whether ‘backward’ or ‘specifically retarded’. A plea for early recognition of specific learning difficulties and the provision of appropriate remedial teaching is made as the present findings suggest that a structured method of teaching can lead to improvement in both reading and spelling.

Notes: [Auszug] A detailed analysis2 of this chymotryptic precipitate has established its formula as Gly.29 Ala.20 Ser.9 Tyr.1, and the C-terminal position has been shown to be occupied mainly by tyrosine3. We have recently investigated the sequence of the amino-acids in the chymotryptic precipitate. This ...

Notes: Summary Contractile responses of guinea-pig peripheral lung strips to noradrenaline were determined in the presence of propranolol (2.5 × 10−6 mol/l). All strips (n = 44) contracted to noradrenaline and a geometric mean EC50 of 1.4 × 10−6 mol/l (1.1 × 10−6 mol/l, 1.8 x 10−6 mol/l 95% confidence limits) was obtained. Contractions were antagonised by phentolamine (5 × 10−7−10−5 mol/l) and by prazosin (10∞−10−7 mol/l). Dose-ratios (DR) were calculated and log (DR-1) was plotted against log concentration of antagonist to yield slopes (± SE) of 0.84 ± 0.14 and 0.73 ± 0.22 respectively which were not significantly different from unity. A pA2 value (± SE) of 6.7 ± 0.2 was obtained for phentolamine and 7.5 ± 0.1 for prazosin. Yohimbine (10−7−10−5 mol/l) did not significantly affect the maximal tension generated or the EC50 values for noradrenaline. These results suggest that α1 adrenoceptors are mediating the contractile responses to noradrenaline. In the presence of cocaine (10−5 mol/l, n=18), normetanephrine (2 × 10−5 mol/l, n = 15), hydrocortisone (2.5 × 10−5 mol/l, n = 15) and normetanephrine (2 × 10−5-5 mol/l) plus cocaine (10−6 5 mol/l, n=15) pA2 values for phentolamine of 6.9, 6.7, 6.6, and 6.3 respectively were obtained. Since these pA2 values are not significantly different from 6.7, it is unlikely that this original pA2 value, which is lower than values obtained with phentolamine at α-adrenoceptors in other tissues, may be explained by neuronal or extraneuronal uptake of noradrenaline. A possible explanation may be that more than one population of α-adrenoceptors contribute to changes in tension in peripheral lung strips.

Notes: Abstract A 5-year-old white boy presented with life-threatening haematemesis from spontaneous rupture of an aneurysm of the high cervical internal carotid artery (ICA). The haemorrhage was controlled by emergency trap ligation of the distal ICA in the neck. The child made an excellent recovery and 7 years later has no neurologic deficit other than an Horner's syndrome. The diagnosis of an extracranial carotid artery aneurysm without a pulsatile lump may be very deceptive.

Notes: Abstract The case of a newborn boy with a congenital cystic neck mass causing respiratory distress is reported. This lesion extended from the submandibular region through a bone defect to the middle cranial fossa but remained totally extradural. There was no underlying brain abnormality. The cyst was composed mainly of mature neuroglial tissue, with some ependymal and choroid plexus elements, and was diagnosed as heterotopic brain. After 8 years' follow-up, the child still has no deficits.
