Notes: The oxidation in air of AuIn alloys with low indium content (1 ppm, 0.1 and 1.0 at. %) was investigated with the help of the time-differential perturbed angular correlation technique. From the results it is concluded that the oxidation is external and is independent of solute concentration. While in the concentrated alloys, the oxide formed was In2O3, in the cases of the dilute ones, In-O-Au complexes appeared. From the oxidation rate in the temperature range 300–1000 °C values of the frequency factor A=0.006(10) cm2/s and the activation energy Q=29.0(5) kcal/mol for the diffusion of indium in gold were obtained.

Notes: Abstract. Increasing the ploughing depth and ploughing in grassland has been common in Germany during the past 20 years. Incubation studies were conducted with topsoils from luvisols and gleysols at different times after change of management in order to assess its influence on nitrogen mineralization and its kinetic parameters. The results show that deep ploughing slows the mineralization of nitrogen. The difference between earlier (1967–72) and more recently (1980–82) deepened topsoil has become smaller after a further three years of cultivation, however. The preceding crops (wheat or sugar beet), the amount of N fertilizer as well as clay and nitrogen contents cause a variation in N mineralization. The results indicate a continuing approach of an‘equilibrium’organic matter and nitrogen content. The enrichment capacity of intensively managed soils may be replenished within 10 years.Gleysols formerly under grass mineralize more nitrogen than‘traditionally’ploughed soils, even 27 years after the ploughing-in. While nitrogen from easily decomposable materials decreases within the first 10 years, the resistant fraction is a long-lasting determinant for N mineralization. Both processes need to be considered when applying fertilizer to minimize nitrate leaching.

Notes: Summary A residual influence of males and females on oviposition has been examined in 7 drosophilids. There was evidence for oviposition deterrence inDrosophila funebris, with males as well as females producing the inhibitory effect. In contrast, male residues stimulated oviposition inZaprionus tuberculatus. Male residues also stimulated oviposition and appeared to serve as an aggregation cue inD. melanogaster.

Notes: Summary Based on reports suggesting aberrant cell-mediated immunity and altered infiltration of immunocompetent cells into the skin in psoriasis, we studied the stimulation of T cells by autologous non-T mononuclear leukocytes (autologous mixed lymphocyte reaction, AMLR) and by epidermal cells isolated from lesional and clinically uninvolved skin in psoriasis (autologous mixed epidermal cell lymphocyte reaction, AMECLR). Age- and sex-matched individuals served as controls. We found that the AMLR in psoriasis (n=11) was similar to that in healthy controls (n=16); furthermore, cell proliferation was alike in the presence of either 5% AB-serum or autologous serum. By contrast, while the AMECLR in healthy controls (n=9) resembled that in psoriatics employing epidermal cells from univolved skin, epidermal cells from lesional sites (n=10) induced a significantly higher proliferation of autologous T cells in the AMECLR (P〈0.01). We conclude that the in vitro stimulation of T cells by non-T mononuclear leukocytes is normal in psoriasis and is not regulated by autologous serum. Lesional psoriatic epidermal cells, however, are more active in stimulating autologous T cell proliferation than cells from univolved psoriatic or normal epidermis.

Notes: Abstract Theγ-decay of levels in21Ne up to 10 MeV excitation energy has been investigated byn — γ coincidence measurements initiated with the18O(α, nγ) reaction at 12, 13, 14.5 and 15.4 MeV bombarding energies. Spin(-parity) assignments of excited states are obtained by combining then — γ angular correlation measurements performed atE α=11, 11.82 and 13.6 MeV with a consideration of lifetimes, neutron penetrabilities of the unbound states, and information from the mirror nucleus21Na. The resulting values of Ex[keV]−J π are as follows: 4525-5+, 4686-3+, 5431-7+, 5549-3+, 5819-7−, 6175-7+, 6268-9+, 6550-9, 6639-9, 7006-7+, 7041-9, 7356-7 or 9, 7422-11(−), 7648-7+, 7981-11 or (7+), 8154-9, 8240-11, 8664-9− or 11 or 13−, 9401-13−, 9867-13− or 15+, 9941-13− or 15 or 17+. The assignment of mirror levels in21Ne —21Na has been extended to the 6175 keV level of21Ne. Excitation energies, electromagnetic properties, Gamow−Teller matrix elements and spectroscopic factors of positive parity states are compared with the results of shell-model calculations which employ a unifieds—d shell Hamiltonian and the unrestricted configuration space of the 0d 5/2 —1s 1/2—0d3/2 shell. Collective properties contained in shell model wave functions are explored up to the termination of bands atJ=17/2 or 19/2. The spectrum of intruder states in21Ne is observed to begin with a 5628 keV,J π=7/2+ state. The 7422, 8664 and 9401 keV levels are assigned as members of previously established negative-parity rotational bands.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of intrinsic lattice defects with111In probe atoms in the fcc metals rhodium and iridium has been studied between 293 and 1,400 K by means of the time differential perturbed angular correlation method. The lattice defects were produced either by the implantation of the probe atoms or by postirradiation with protons. In rhodium a unique defect-probe atom configuration leading to a quadrupole interaction frequencyv Q1=100(2)MHz and η=0 has been observed. The symmetry axis of the corresponding electric field gradient points into the 〈110〉 direction of the fcc lattice. The defect was interpreted as a monovacancy trapped at the probe atom in the 〈110〉 nearest neighbour position. In iridium two defects characterized byv Q1=118(2)MHz, η=0 andv Q2=228(2)MHz, η=0 have been observed. The symmetry axes of the corresponding electric field gradients point into the 〈110〉 and 〈111〉 directions and the defects were interpreted as a monovacancy in a nearest neighbour position and a relaxed divacancy, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Every year, several hundred tonnes of dry Gymnogongrus furcellatus are exported from Chile for carrageenan production. The present study provides ecological information for rational harvesting practices, including an understanding of the effects of environmental factors on growth. Field results indicate that the species is abundant in areas where disturbing factors do not destroy the crustose base of the plants, which can survive sand burial, but is grazing sensitive. In central Chile the erect axes have a clear seasonal pattern of growth which, as extrapolated from laboratory experiments, is most affected by seasonal changes in quantum dosage and photoperiod. Laboratory experiments show that vitamins and CO2 additions also influence growth rates significantly. Field data indicate that harvesting in central Chile should be done bi-monthly, within the six most productive months of the year and be stopped before March, when the female gametophytes become fertile. Hand picking is the least destructive harvesting method. Even though the daily growth rate of the species could be raised to 7% in laboratory experiments, tank cultivation appears uneconomical. The cost of some of the factors required for the growth of this species, such as daily vitamin additions, aeration and CO2 supplements, are unlikely to be recovered by the 25% average carrageenan content of this species. In addition, the high light requirements of the species would restrict culture to only 6 months a year at these latitudes. Therefore adequate management of the beds is required for sustained production.
