    Notes: The marine T-cell clone E11 isolated from a primary H-2k histocompatible one-way mixed lymphocyte culture of B10.BR anti C3H/Tif spleen cells was used to study multidirectional interactions in strong stimulatory Mls disparate responses. Several parameters have recently been studied, and proliferation of T cells upon stimulation by macrophages or B cells of Mls-disparate stimulator cells, induction of differentiation of B cells of stimulator strains but inhibition of their macrophage differentiation, and the inhibition by E11 T cells of the production of a mitogenic mediator by Mls-disparate spleen cells have been found. As shown in this paper, these phenomena can be explained by an Mlsa, d, c specific induction of gamma-interferon(IFN-γ) production in the responder B10.BR (Mlsb) E11 T cells. It is suggested that (IFN-γ), as a regulator of feedback mechanisms, plays a critical role in Mls disparate T-cell stimulation.

    Notes: The murine T cell clone E11, isolated from a primary H-2k-histocompatible, one-way mixed lymphocyte culture of B10.BR anti-C3H/Tif spleen cells, has been used to analyse multidirectional interactions in Mil-disparate responses. Several events can be observed. There is proliferation of T cells upon stimulation by macrophages or B cells of Mls-disparate stimulator cells. In addition, one finds induction of differentiation of B cells of stimulator strains. E11 T cells inhibit spreading and differentiation of macrophages of stimulator strains and also prevent the production of a T cell growth-supporting mediator by Mls-disparate spleen cells. All these phenomena can be explained by Mlsa,d,c-specific induction of gamma-interferon (γ-IFN) production in the responder B10.BR (Mlsb) E11 T cells. It is suggested that γ-IFN, as a regulator of feedback mechanisms, plays an essential role in Mls-disparate cell interactions.

    Notes: Abstract A new seismic source for carrying out high resolution measurements of deep ocean crustal structure has been constructed and successfully used in a number of ocean bottom refraction experiments on the Mid Atlantic Ridge near 23° N. The source is towed within 100 m of the ocean floor on a conventional 0.68″ coaxial cable and is capable of firing, upon command from the research vessel, up to 48 individual 2.3 kg explosive charges. The explosive used was commercially available Penta-Erythritol-Tetra Nitrate (PETN) that was activated by 14.9 gm m−1 Primacord and DuPont E-97 electrical detonators. For safety reasons each detonator was fitted with a pressure switch that maintained a short until the source was at depth in excess of approximately 300 m. In addition, a mechanical protector isolated the detonator from the main charge and was only removed by the physical release of the explosive from the source package. These and other safety precautions resulted in several misfires but three experiments were successfully completed during the summer of 1985 at source depths of 3000–4000 m.

    Notes: Abstract Three bovine serum albumin-specific Lyt-2+ T suppressor (Ts) cell clones from CBA/J mice have been analyzed with regard to expression of L3T4 molecules. All three Ts-cell clones can be stained with monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to L3T4. Tested for the two clones restricted to recognition of Ek determinants, antigen-specific proliferation on antigen-presenting cells, but not the proliferation induced by conditioned medium can be inhibited by L314-specific mAb. In a similar way, Ts-cell cytolytic effector functions can be blocked by L3T4-specific mAb. Thus L3T4 structures seem to play a role in Ts-cell functions. Furthermore, the data support the view that L3T4 expression can be a property of class II-restricted T cells irrespective of their Lyt phenotype.

    Notes: Summary The linkages formed between glutaraldehyde-activated solid supports and ligands containing amino groups are more stable than bonds formed after oxidation of glucose residues of the support to aldehyde groups. These results show that different types of chemical bonds are formed by the two kinds of activated support. If glutaral dehyde is used for the activation the reduction step is not necessary.

Filter, die mit einem geeigneten Absorbens imprägniert sind, werden stationär exponiert. Dann werden Ringe entwickelt und an Hand einer Eichskala geschätzt. Die Abhängigkeit der absorbierten Gasmenge von Gaskonzentration und Expositionszeit wurde zur Ermittlung von Eichkurven ausgenutzt. Von Schwefeldioxid, Schwefelwasserstoff und Formaldehyd wurden Proben bestimmt.
    Notes: Summary A new ring-oven method for the determination of gases is described. Filter papers that are impregnated with a suitable absorbent are exposed stationary. Then rings are developed and estimated by means of a calibration scale. The dependence of the amount of absorbed gas on gas concentration and exposition time is used for setting up calibration curves. For the gases sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and formaldehyde samples are determined.

    Notes: The digestion of several proteins, casein, α-lactalbumin, human serum albumin and a mixture of whey proteins by immobilized pronase, thermitase and leucine aminopeptidase was studied on various conditions in five types of enzyme reactors. Reactors and operating conditions were designed to maximize the extent of hydrolysis and to minimize the adverse effects of the macromolecular nature of the substrates. A simple analytical method was developed to follow routinely the extent of hydrolysis. Substrate proteins were subjected to various pretreatments intended to disturb their native structure. The maximum feasible extent of hydrolysis in the reactor effluent, which is an average quantity, clustered around the magic figure of 33% in all systems studied. Protein digestion in bubbled column reactors charged with the polyaminomethylstyrene-fixed thermostable proteinase “thermitase” and operated at 50 to 60°C turned out to be the most efficient setup to produce continuously amino acid/peptide mixtures.
