Notes: Some aspects of the dynamics of thin-film synthesis of aluminum nitride and aluminum oxide produced by ion-assisted deposition have been deduced from in situ measurements by ellipsometry, photometry, and ion scattering spectroscopy. Measurements obtained during the etching of aluminum films by nitrogen and oxygen ion beams have established the thickness of the synthesized layer and the rate of compound formation. Some of these measurements have been compared with a theoretical model which predicts the time evolution of the synthesized surface layer as well as the steady-state layer thickness. The breakdown voltage and variation of capacitance with applied voltage of aluminum oxide films prepared by ion-assisted deposition are also presented. Furthermore, the optical properties of ion-assisted AlN and Al2O3 in the visible region are given.

Notes: A procedure is described which determines the best rotations to superimpose M rigid n-point objects, such that the weighted sum of mutual squared deviations is minimized. Apart from providing an easy and rigorous way for the least-squares superposition of any number of similar structures, this procedure can also be used to obtain a set of mean atomic positions for a substructural fragment that is contained in different structures with slight deviations from its mean geometry or to symmetrize distorted structures.

Notes: Abstract We present a combined overview of current experimental knowledge and theoretical understanding of high temperature superconductivity based on the charge transfer excitation model. Our model is capable of rationalizing a great variety of experimental information and suggests directions to follow in designing even higherT c materials.

Notes: Summary Fibrosis and neoplasia are evoked by asbestos fibres. Different experimental models have been used to elucidate the cellular mechanism of their pathogenesis but there is no report available dealing with the role of structural glycoproteins and collagens in the development of the fibrosis. The omentums of 20 female SPF-Sprague-Dawley rats were investigated 1, 2 and 6 months after intraperitoneal injection of 15 mg UICC reference samples of crocidolite, by light- and immunofluorescence microscopy. Using monospecific antibodies, laminin, collagens types I and III and fibronectin were localized. After 6 months typical asbestos bodies were detected. By indirect marking of the basal lamina with anti-laminin-antibodies the marked degree of vessel proliferation occurring during the development of granuloma became visible. The deposition of connective tissue which was already established after 4 weeks was mainly due to collagen type III. After 4 and 8 weeks an accumulation of fibronectin associated with larger asbestos fibres was observed. The results suggest that fibrogenesis is promoted by the opsonic activity of fibronectin for long asbestos fibres. The fibrosis may derive from activated resident fibroblasts.

Notes: Abstract Five commercial steels ranging from the martensitic stainless steel containing 12% chromium to the superferrite containing 29% chromium, 4% molybdenum, and 2% nickel have been studied by XPS. In addition, a pure iron-chromium alloy containing 7% chromium has been investigated. Armco iron and pure chromium (99.99%) were included as references. The formation of the passive films (or corrosion) occurred in deoxygenated 0.1 M NaCl solution (pH=5.6), from which the samples were transferred directly to the XPS chamber under controlled atmosphere (Ar). Concentration profiles (at.-%) of the alloy constituents in their oxidized and metallic states have been determined separately from the measured XPS depth profiles. Forc≳= 12% chromium the passive films have the following structure: there is a depletion of Cr in the inner region, followed by an enrichment (concentration maximum) in the central region of the films. The height of this maximum increases, and its position shifts towards the surface with increasing chromium content in the alloy. The outermost monolayers are rich in water and hydroxyl groups. Various significant properties of the films change drastically at the critical chromium concentration of about 12%. This behaviour is rather independent of the other components (Mo, Ni, Cu) present in the alloys and is discussed in terms of a phase transition in the films which is controlled by the chromium concentration.

Notes: Abstract Both the Ir(110)1×2 and the Ir(100)1×5 reconstructed surfaces have been imaged in the field ion microscope. The observations agree with results obtained on macroscopic single crystal surfaces. Evidence for a possible 1×2 reconstruction of the Ir(113) surface is shown.

Notes: [Auszug] Both cristobalite and diopside have been studied by 17O NMR using conventional sample-spinning techniques (ref. 9 and E. Oldfield and R. J. Kirkpatrick, manuscript in preparation). Cristobalite is known to have a single crystallographically distinct oxygen site, with the oxygens arranged ...
