Notes: Multiple endopeptidases as biochemical marker for resistance of winter wheat to Pseudocercosporella herpotnchoides (Fron) Deighton. Electrophoretic patterns of primary leaf endopeptidases in breeding material derived from crosses between different winter wheat genotypes and amphidiploids (Triticum turgidum×Aegilops ventricosa) were compared with those of cultivars susceptible to Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides. The results indicate that the multiple endopeptidase EP-1 coded by Wheat chromosome 7 D is absent in the international known lines ‘VPM 1’ and ‘Roazon’ and in all 24 winter wheat selections with increased resistance to P. herpotrichoides.A close relationship between the absence of EP-1 and the introduction of Aegilops ventricosa resistance is assumed. The use of this biochemical marker in wheat breeding is proposed.

Notes: Floquet theory is applied to the stability analysis of linear triatomic molecules having local Morse bonding potentials. We identify conditions for the existence of a symmetric mode and analyze its stability as a function of the energy and symmetric to antisymmetric normal mode frequency ratio. In the stable region we apply a special phase normalization to the Floquet eigenvalues that allows us to identify factors in the Floquet index with a red-shifted generalized antisymmetric mode frequency. Instabilities set in when the ratio of this frequency to the symmetric mode frequency is integer or half-integer. Analytic forms for Poincaré surfaces of section valid for the linearized theory are derived and compared with actual trajectory intersections for both stable and unstable cases. In the stable (quasiperiodic) cases, surfaces corresponding to different sections are ellipses with varying eccentricity but constant area. Hyperbolas are obtained in unstable cases.

Notes: We present an analytical solution for the driven Floquet oscillator equation (i.e., Hill's equation with a driving term). This equation arises, without the driving term, in the analysis of the stability of periodic solutions in nonlinear system. With the driving term, one includes the interaction with an external field. For quasiperiodic motion we find sharp resonances at the Fourier component frequencies of the Floquet oscillator and corresponding "line strengths.'' For chaotic motion there are only broadened spectral features.

Notes: Lymphocytes, plasma cells, granulocytes (three to four types), macrophages and monocyte-like cells were ultrastructurally distinguished in the intestinal mucosa of carp. Neutrophilic granulocytes and lymphoid cells were present in and under the epithelium throughout the gut. In contrast to macrophages which dominated in the epithelium of the second segment, basophilic and eosinophilic granulocytes (and their intermediates) were mainly found in the connective tissue of the first segment. Applying monoclonal antibodies against serum immunoglobulin (Ig) in an immunogold technique, only a minority of lymphoid cells appeared to be Ig-immunoreactive at their external membrane, suggesting the presence of many more T than B cells in the intestinal mucosa. Except for cells which resembled immature plasma cells, plasma cells did not show, or hardly showed, Ig at their surface. In contrast with the head kidney, plasma cells with an Ig-immunoreactive cytoplasm were scarce in the intestinal mucosa. As mucosa plasma cells were regularly found with the electron microscope, they possibly contain another class of Ig. Macrophages and monocyte-like cells were also found to be Ig-immunoreactive, suggesting the presence of immune complexes at their external membrane. The immunological significance of B- and T-like lymphocytes next to immune complex-binding and antigen-presenting macrophages in the second gut segment is discussed.

Notes: Djungarian hamsters kept in long photoperiod (16:8 L:D) were injected daily at 0800, 1200, or 1600 with 25 μg of melatonin. During 90 days of treatment, body weight and fur coloration were checked at weekly intervals, and at the end of the treatment the reproductive status of the hamsters and their thermoregulatory properties (cold limit, maximum thermoregulatory heat production, nonshivering thermogenesis, cytochrome oxidase activity in brown adipose tissue) were measured. Hamsters injected at 1600 changed from summer to winter status with regard to all functions investigated responding simultaneously; i. e., their body weights decreased, their fur became white, their gonads regressed, and their thermoregulatory properties improved. All these changes were identical to the effects of short photoperiod (8:16 L:D) exposure. Injections of melatonin at 0800 and 1200 were ineffective for reproductive functions, but the injection of melatonin at 0800 caused slight improvements of thermogenesis. The response to melatonin injected at 1600 could be suppressed by an additional injection of melatonin at 0800 (75 μg). Pinealectomized or ganglionectomized hamsters kept in long photoperiod did not respond to daily injections of melatonin at 1600 for the first 60 days of treatment, but during a prolonged treatment their sensitivity to melatonin was restored. Similarly, pinealectomized or ganglionectomized hamsters failed to respond to short photoperiod for about 40 days, but during prolonged exposure their sensitivity to short photoperiod was restored.

Notes: Extracts of Pseudomonas sp. CBS3 converted 4-chlorobenzoate into 4-hydroxybenzoate. The enzyme responsible for this conversion was enriched by ammonium sulphate fractionation (30–60% saturation, 1.3-fold). The optimum conditions for the reaction were 30–35°C and pH 7–7.5. The enzyme was activated by Mn2+ (1 mM final concentration) up to 120-fold, and by Co2+ (1 mM final concentration) up to 60-fold. Other divalent ions had no effect. EDTA inhibited the enzyme. 4-Bromobenzoate and 4-iodobenzoate were substrates for the enzyme, but 4-fluorobenzoate was not converted.
