Notes: Summary Using disomic chromosome substitution lines based on the susceptible wheat cultivar ‘Chinese Spring’, loose smut resistance of wheat cultivars ‘Hope’ and ‘Thatcher’ was shown to be conferred in each case by a single dominant major gene carried on chromosome 7 A (‘Hope’) or 7 B (‘Thatcher’). Partial resistance was determined by genes on an additional eight ‘Hope’ or seven ‘Thatcher’ chromosomes, and similarities were evident between the partial resistance genotypes of‘Hope’ and ‘Thatcher’. ‘Chinese Spring’ exhibited a mean infection value of approximately 50%, indicating a significant level of partial resistance, which was found to be due, in part, to genes on the homoeologous chromosome arms 1 As, 1 Es and 1 Ds, and to cytoplasmic genes. Substitution of the ‘Chinese Spring’ nucleus into the cytoplasm of Aegilops squarrosa, Ae. variabilis or Ae. mutica resulted in increased susceptibility to Ustilago tritici. Several alloplasmic lines of the resistant wheat cultivars ‘Selkirk’ and ‘Chris’ exhibited race-specific susceptibility to U. tritici.

Notes: Summary To better understand the role of autoimmunity in the pathogenesis of dermatitis herpetiformis, linear IgA bullous dermatosis or other skin disorders, the antigenic specificity of the immune reactants bound in vivo in the skin must be identified. In order to do so, one must first be able to elute these immune reactants from the skin. We describe here a simple method of eluting not only specifically bound IgG, but also IgA and other immunoglobulins and complement components from skin biopsy material. The method involves cutaneous washing of the entrapped serum proteins in PBS pH 7 and pH 5 buffers followed by specific immunoglobulin elutions at pH 3 and 2. The IgA deposits which could not be removed by this treatment were eluted by a combination of low pH (0.5 M citrate pH 2) and a chaotropic agent (2 M NaCl). The relative concentration of IgA in eluates when quantitated by fluoroimmunoassay were three-to five-fold higher in dermatitis herpetiformis skin biopsy specimens, than in eluates of bullous pemphigoid or normal skin biopsy specimens.

Notes: Abstract Natural and synthetic clerodane diterpenoids were assayed behaviourally and electrophysiologically as antifeedants against larvae of Spodoptera exempta (Walker), S. littoralis (Boisduval), S. frugiperda (J. E. Smith), Heliothis armigera (Hübner) and H. virescens (F.). The constitution of the decalin ring and the furofuran side chain were found to have an important antifeedant effect. A correlation of behavioural and electrophysiological responses of the species of Spodoptera revealed aspects of their neural codes and provided some insight into the receptor mechanisms that may operate in individual neurones. The oligophagous S. exempta was more susceptible than the polyphagous species.
