Notes: Abstract Doses of 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 gl-tryptophan, the amino acid precursor of serotonin, or saline alone were administered by IV infusion to a group of 11 healthy male subjects, and both hormonal and behavioral responses were monitored. Significant increases were observed in plasma concentrations of growth hormone and prolactin after all three doses ofl-tryptophan, but not after saline infusion. No alterations in cortisol or thryotropin were noted at any level. Examination of behavioral effects ofl-tryptophan revealed a dose-dependent impairment in performance on the symbol copying test. In addition,l-tryptophan produced significant effects on mental and physical sedation, but did not alter subjective ratings of tranquilization. In agreement with some prior reports, these observations support the ability ofl-tryptophan, when administered IV in high doses, to produce pronounced effects on the central nervous system in humans, and suggest the potential utility of this paradigm as a neuroendocrine challenge test.

Notes: Abstract Relatively little is known about the effects of aggregate economic conditions on first-birth timing. In this paper, we argue that aggregate economic conditions are important macrolevel forces driving the transition to parenthood. We develop and test a causal model, separately by race, in which economic conditions influence both marital status and first-birth timing. Our results indicate that economic conditions are significant predictors of both outcomes, with economic conditions for females having effects different from those for males. A particularly noteworthy finding is that favorable wage trajectories for females lead to a decreased likelihood of being married and slower birth timing (a finding opposite to that predicted on the basis of opportunity costs). For blacks, the majority of the effects of economic conditions on the transition to parenthood are direct, while for whites a significant proportion of effects are indirect through marital status.

Notes: Morphogenesis and maturation of the sagittal suture in newborn C57B1/6J strain mice were studied using light and electron microscopy. Morphodifferentiation of the murine parietal bones progresses radially with the interposed sagittal suture, assuming a greater level of maturity at birth at a midpoint along its length. The presumptive suture develops in a sulcus, deeper posteriorly, more shallow anteriorly. Cells at the osteogenic front (OF) are distinguished from the surrounding fibrocytic cells by a number of distinctive characteristics: 1. increased cytoplasmic density; 2. extensive endoplasmic reticulum; 3. dispersed nuclear chromatin aggregates; 4. extensive surface projections; 5. close approximation.Mineralization of the developing parietal bone occurs extracellularly with the initial deposits of apatite crystals exhibiting no oriented relationship to either cellular or extracellular fibrillar elements. The majority of collagen fibers lie superior and inferior to the presumptive suture, oriented anteroposteriorly with their long axes parallel to the ectocranial surface. Other fiber bundles more intimately associated with the developing suture display a more random orientation.
