    Notes: Summary Many infants with tracheotomies remain cannulated for prolonged periods while the underlying cause of airway obstruction is either treated or natural resolution is awaited (usually by growth). To enable these children to enjoy a relatively normal family environment despite a tracheotomy, it is desirable that they should be managed at home for at least part of the time. For the past 8 years we have routinely used soft polyvinyl chloride paediatric tracheotomy tubes (Shiley) in our patients. These tubes have proved to be relatively resistant to obstruction with secretions and are changed at 1- to 2-week intervals. They can be modified by making a series of three to four 2-mm through-and-through fenestrations around the shoulder in order to improve speech production and facilitate decannulation. Parents are tutored in tracheotomy care, which includes tube changing, humidification and suction. They are then permitted to take their child home from hospital when they are considered to be competent. Twenty-eight children (13 boys, 15 girls) with a mean age of 14.5 weeks (range 1–525 weeks) at the time of tracheotomy have been managed at home using this system. The median period of hospitalisation was 12 weeks (range 5–75 weeks), and the median duration of home management was 94 weeks (range 13–394 weeks). Sixteen patients have been successfully decannulated, 11 remain cannulated and 1 died at home from sudden infant death syndrome. Despite supportive measures, the majority of the children developed intermittent chest infections. Acute tubal obstruction occurred in 9 cases and the tube displacement occurred in 3 cases; each of these episodes was treated satisfactorily by promptly changing the tube. Our overall experiences have shown that using the system described has resulted in the home-care of our patients being a safe and practical alternative to prolonged hospitalisation.

    Notes: Abstract A gravimetric technique was used to measure the cation vacancy concentration in pure ferrous sulfide and in ferrous sulfide containing small amounts of chromium or manganese. Measurements were made over a wide range of sulfur pressures, defined by H2/H2S mixtures, at 500, 600, and 700°C (723, 823, and 923 K). Chromium was found to increase the defect concentration by an amount consistent with the Wagner-Hauffe model pertaining to aliovalent cations. Also in accord with this model, manganese did not measurably affect the cation vacancy concentration.

    Notes: A kinetic model for chemical events occurring within the high pressure electron capture mass spectrometer (HPECMS) ion source is developed which includes four different pathways by which unconventional negative ions can be produced. These routes to unusual ions include reactions of gas phase free radicals, surface-assisted reactions, ion-electron and ion-ion recombination reactions, and ion-wall neutralization. The model developed here provides a diagnostic tool useful for the elucidation of unusual HPEC spectra. Such spectra for two environmentally important classes of compounds are explained by use of the model. These compound classes include the trifluoroacetic derivatives of polycyclic aromatic amines, which have been shown to be present in materials derived from liquified coal, and the derivatives of hexachlorocyclopentadiene, which are used as pesticides. It is shown in this study that several processes, in addition to electron capture, can be operative in the typical HPECMS ion source, and that these processes can be used advantageously for the generation of informative and sensitive mass spectral signals.

    Notes: The effects of water-soluble and monomer-soluble impurities on the kinetics of emulsion polymerization of monomers following Case II kinetics (e.g., styrene) are investigated. Experimental studies reveal that impurities can have an appreciable effect on both polymer particle nucleation and growth. These effects are shown to be well predicted by a mathematical model.

    Notes: Widely applied selection strategies for plasmid-containing cells in unstable recombinant populations are based upon synthesis in those cells of an essential, selection gene product. Regular partitioning of this gene product combined with asymmetric plasmid segregation produces plasmid-free cells which retain for some time the ability to grow in selective medium. This theory is elaborated here in terms of a segregated model for an unstable recombinant population which predicts population growth characteristics and composition based upon experimental data for stable strain growth kinetics, plasmid content, and selection gene product stability. Analytical solutions from this model are compared with an unsegregated phenomenological model to evaluate the effective specific growth rate of plasmid-free cells in selective medium. Model predictions have been validated using experimental growth kinetics and flow cytometry data for Saccharomyces cerevisiae D603 populations containing one of the plasmids YCpG1ARS1, YCpG1ΔR8, YCpG1ΔR88, YCpG1ΔH103, YCpG1ΔH200, pLGARS1, and pLGSD5. The recombinant strains investigated encompass a broad range of plasmid content (from one to 18 plasmids per cell) and probability α of plasmid loss at division (0.05 ≤ α ≤ 0.42). Experimental data for all strains considered is inconsistent with the hypothesis that plasmid-free cells are unable to grow in selective medium. For a given value of a, the fraction of plasmid-containing cells in the population decreases with increasing plasmid content and increases for less stable selection gene products. This conceptual framework and mathematical model will aid in strain development for greater effective stability.

    Notes: Various semi-empirical schemes for generating x-ray attenuation coefficients, μ/ρ, devised primarily for use in electron probe microanalysis, are considered for application in the PIXE analysis of thick specimens where the relevant x-ray energy region is 1-40 keV. Using selected high-accuracy experimental data, it is shown that current theoretical values of μ/ρ agree better with the data than do the various schemes. The errors transmitted into PIXE analysis by use of the theoretical values are estimated, and a new parameterization of these values suitable for microcomputer use is justified and tested.

    Notes: Spectra have been recorded from monochromatized Kα1, Kβ1 and Lα1 X-rays in the 3 - 16 keV energy region incident on an Si(Li) detector. An analytic lineshape consisting of a Gaussian plus two Gaussian-exponential convolutes fits these well, except at very low energy. The intensities and parameters of these tails are explored in the context of the processes responsible, and the behaviour of the shorter tail is compared with the predictions of a model calculation of Auger and photoelectron escape. The well behaved energy dependence of the tailing parameters improves the prospects for more accurate fitting of complex XRF, EPMA and PIXE spectra.

    Notes: Raman spectra of single crystals of the layered compounds SbI3 and AsI3 at 15K are reported. Polarization measurements allow the eight principal peaks to be classified according to symmetry species. Results of a group theoretical analysis based on both molecular and ionic descriptions of the crystal structure are discussed, and assignments of the observed spectra are proposed. Some ramifications of the more ionic nature of SbI3 on its spectrum are briefly described.
