    Notes: Batch experiments were conducted to examine the effects of several substrate analogs on the degradation of pentachlorophenol by an enrichment culture of pentachlorophenol-utilizing bacteria. The presence of substrate analogs which were unable to serve as a carbon source for growth of the culture (e.g., 3,5,6,-trichloro-2-pyridinol, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) decreased the rate of pentachlorophenol degradation. The presence of a utilizable substrate analog (e.g., phenol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol) also inhibited the initial rate of pentachlorophenol degradation; however, the overall removal rate was accelerated due to an increase in cell mass concentration as a result of simultaneous growth on both substrates. These effects were shown to be predicted by a mathematical model based on a modified Monod equation. Kinetic parameters obtained from the results of laboratory studies can be used for further process analysis to define the optimal conditions for the biological treatment of complex mixtures of phenolic compounds.

    Notes: Dynamic fiber wettability measurements are performed on T-300 carbon and Teflon fibers immersed in hexa methyl disiloxane (HMDS) silicone oil and a difunctional liquid epoxy resin, neopentyl diglycidyl ether (NPDGE). Specifically, four types of these carbon fibers, which are used to reinforce high performance composites, are studied. Decreases in the wetting force are observed for progressive immersions of all carbon fibers in the silicone oil but not observed with Teflon fibers, indicating adsorption may be occurring on the carbon surface. Perimeters determined from these wetting measurements on carbon fibers are larger than those calculated, assuming the fibers to be smooth cylinders. Scanning electron micrographs suggest this difference is attributable to surface crenulations. All carbon fibers immersed in the epoxy resin show non-zero contact angles.

    Notes: Proton spin-lattice relaxation rates (R1 values) have been measured at 400 MHz for a series of substituted aromatic compounds to determine the steric effects of ortho substituents on the R1 values of the methyl groups. These values have been interpreted on the basis of differences in the barriers to methyl group rotation caused by the substituent, resulting in changes in the contributions from the dipolar and the spin-rotation relaxation mechanisms. A significant dynamic range of methyl R1 values has been observed, showing that these measurements are sensitive to the steric environment.
