    Notes: Summary Double-stranded ribonucleic acids (dsRNA) were isolated from mitochondria in urediosporelings of three cereal stem rusts, Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici, f. sp. secalis and f. sp. avenae, and two cereal leaf rusts, P. recondita f. sp. tritici and P. coronata f. sp. avenae, and analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis. The double strandedness of the RNA molecules was characterized by nuclease treatments (RNase A, DNase 1 and S1 nuclease) and CF-11 cellulose column chromatography. No interspecific variation in multisegments of dsRNA was observed among races of each forma specialis. As to the interspecific variation, although each of three forma specialis of Puccinia graminis had similar dsRNA segments, 4.8, 5.0 and 5.2 kb, wheat leaf rust and oat crown rust had additional dsRNA segments of 2.7, 2.8, 5.8 and 6.0 kb. The presence of a dsRNA segment of 5 kb size in all isolates and species examined indicates that this unique segment can be a molecular marker for the rust family, Uredinales. Dot-blot hybridization indicated that there is no sequence homology between dsRNA segments and mitochondrial DNA.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of pulsed acidification on invertebrate densities and drift, and water chemistry, in a high altitude Sierra Nevada stream were measured using artificial stream channels. Water was diverted from the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River, California, U.S.A., through twelve replicate channels; however, low flow in the summer of 1985 eliminated all but four of these channels. Channels were stocked with natural substrates and organisms from the Marble Fork of the Kaweah River. After a three week acclimation period, we simulated a low pH rain event by adding acid (H2SO4 and HNO3) to two of the channels, reducing pH to 5.0 for 6 hours. The other two channels acted as controls (pH 6.4). During acid additions, Baetis spp. drift in acidified channels was ca. 7 times higher than in control channels (F = 39.02, p 〈 0.025; data fourth root transformed, ANOVA), and the percentage of drifting baetids that was dead was significantly higher in acidified than control channels (46% vs. 0%, F = 29.86, p 〈 0.05; arcsine square root transformed data, ANOVA). Other taxa showed no significant drift responses, and benthic densities of all taxa showed no effects two days after acidification, probably owing to rapid recolonization by invertebrate drift in influent waters. Stream chemistry data are presented; heavy metal concentrations did not significantly increase in the 2 m stream channels.

    Notes: Blends of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) with poly- (styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) and poly (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) prepared by screw extrusion and solution-casting were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. From the measured glass-transition temperatures (Tg) and specific heat increments (ΔCp) at the Tg, SAN appears to dissolve more in the PC-rich phase than does PC in the SAN-rich phase. Also, the decrease of Tg (PC) in PC/ABS blends is larger than in the PC/SAN blends. From the Tg behavior and the electron microscopy study, it is suggested that the compatibility increases more in the SAN-rich compositions than in the PC-rich compositions of the blends. In the study of extrudate swell of the PC/SAN blends and the PC/ABS blends, the maximum level of extrudate swell is reached at 0.5 weight fraction of PC for both blend systems. The Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter (χ12) between PC and SAN was calculated and found to be 0.034 ± 0.004. A similar value of χ for PC and SAN was found with the PC/ABS blends.
