Notes: A theory is presented for the fully-developed flow of gas and particles in a vertical pipe. The relation between gas pressure gradient and the flow rates of the two phases is predicted, over the whole range of cocurrent and countercurrent flows, together with velocity profiles for both phases and the radial concentration profile for the particles. The gas and the particles interact through a drag force depending on their relative velocity, and there are mutual interactions between pairs of particles through inelastic collisions. This model is shown to account for marked segregation of gas and particles in the radial direction, and the predicted relation between the pressure gradient and the flow rates of the two phases is surprisingly complex.

Notes: In the analysis of countercurrent adsorption processes, an equilibrium theory in which local equilibrium between the fluid and the adsorbent phases is assumed has been used in the past to determine the composition of the pinch state that would be obtained for long columns. It is shown that this equilibrium theory is deficient and that certain mass transfer parameters, which are lost in the procedure by which the model equations for the equilibrium theory are formulated, can have a profound effect on the composition of the pinch.

Notes: A system consisting of a mode-locked and cavity-dumped picosecond laser and gated (5 ns) intensified diode array detector has been used to evaluate the potential of diode arrays as detectors in fluorescence rejection measurements of Raman spectra. Successful fluorescence rejection was observed, but both the level of rejection and the signal-to-noise improvement observed would be substantially improved if the operating characteristics of the laser system and of the array were different. It was demonstrated that the diode array opens several times, at intervals of ca 15.5 ns, for each trigger pulse supplied.
