Notizen: Polyaromatic ether-ketones prepared from isophthaloyl dichloride, diphenyl ether, and various amounts of biphenylene and its derivative, were compressed to films under various conditions, and their crosslinking behaviors were studied. Although strong and flexible films could be obtained from low melting crosslinkable polymers, the low molecular weight polymers, which melt below 300°C, decompose at the biphenylene ring opening temperature of over 290°C, giving films full of gas bubbles. The addition of metal complexes to decrease the biphenylene ring opening temperature did not improve the film quality, although gas bubbles could be avoided. The strong and flexible films were amorphous, and the brittle films were mixtures of crystalline and amorphous polymers.

Notizen: Poly(phenylacetylenes) were synthesized using various palladium (II) salts as initiators. In the case of palladium diacetate, the polymerizations were found to be extremely exothermic, with explosions occurring on some occasions. The polymers produced yielded two fractions, a methanol soluble and a methanol insoluble fraction. Both fractions were found to be low molecular weight linear polymers.

Notizen: The monomer 4-bromo-4′-ethynyl biphenyl was synthesized and subsequently polymerized utilizing a bis (triphenylphosphine) palladium (II) chloride, copper (I) iodide, triphenylphosphine catalyst system in an organic amine solvent(s). The polymers produced were predominantly insoluble materials with reasonable thermal stability.

Notizen: The title monomer was polymerized using a bis(triphenyl phosphine) palladium (II) chloride, cuprous iodide, triphenyl phosphine catalyst system. The products are low-molecular-weight materials with thermal stabilities somewhat inferior to corresponding phenylacetylene-based polymers.

Notizen: Low-molecular-weight homopolymers of m-bromophenylacetylene, as well as copolymers and networks of select di- and triethynyl benzenes with di- and tribromobenzenes, have been synthesized via a coupling reaction utilizing a palladium (II) salt, triphenylphosphine, cuprous iodide catalyst system.

Notizen: The title monomer was polymerized by thermal initiation and the polymers were analyzed by IR, NMR, and GPC. The polymers were found to be low molecular weight species that had eliminated bromine as the polymerization progressed. In addition, initiation with AIBN was attempted, however, no difference in rate of polymerization, percent conversion, or molecular weight was noted between these polymers and those synthesized by thermal initiation. Also, no initiator fragments were found in the polymers.

Notizen: A polymer-bound palladium catalyst was synthesized from palladium diacetate and a single crystal polyethylene having 2,2′-bipyridyl moieties as pendant groups. The resulting material was used in place of a free palladium catalyst in the synthesis of acetylene-terminated resins. Supports other than polyethylen were also tested for their ability to bind palladium and their subsequent activity as catalysts in the synthesis of acetylene-terminated polymers.

Notizen: New high molecular weight (inherent viscosities, 1.21-0.50 dL/g) aramids having silicon and pendant phenyl groups were synthesized by low temperature interfacial polycondensation technique involving the reaction of acid chlorides: bis(4-chlorocarbonylphenyl)dimethylsilane and bis(3-chlorocarbonylphenyl)dimethylsilane with diamines: 2,5-bis(4-aminophenyl)-3,4-diphenyl-thiophene and bis(4-aminophenyl)ether. Copolyamides were obtained by using different proportions of these diamines. All the polymers were completely soluble in organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and N,N-dimethylformamide. Thermal properties were evaluated by thermogravimetry which showed no weight loss below 325°C in both air and nitrogen atmospheres.

Notizen: Polyaromatic ether-ketones with various inherent viscosities were prepared and their thermal properties and stress-strain relationships were studied. It was found that the polymer should have an inherent viscosity greater than 0.8 in order to give flexible films, but there was no difference in thermal and stress-strain properties among polymers with viscosities greater than 0.8. Values of 110 MPa and 13% are considered to be the standard values of tensile strength and elongation, respectively, for these polyaromatic ether-ketones. The crosslinking effects on these properties were also studied, using polymers containing 1 and 5 mol % of crosslinkable biphenylene units, but no significant changes in the properties due to crosslinking were observed.
