    Notes: Helium pressure broadening cross sections for the (J,K)=(1,1), (2,2) and (3,3) inversion transitions of ammonia were measured at temperatures from 10 to 35 K. Measurements were taken in a quasiequilibrium cell using the collisional cooling technique. In contrast to the situation at room temperature where there is little state-to-state variation in helium pressure broadening cross sections, at low temperature the (3,3) cross sections were found to be, on average, three times larger than the (1,1) cross sections while the (2,2) cross sections were twice as large as the (1,1) values. The major factor determining the relative size of the low temperature cross sections appears to be the contribution from inelastic collisions into lower energy levels. The relative size of the cross sections thus scales with the number of rotational levels underlying a given (J,K) state. Cross sections were also calculated for comparison with the experimental data using three existing NH3–He potential surfaces. Overall, none of the three surfaces gave consistent agreement with the experimental results for all three observed transitions. The discrepancy between experiment and theory was greatest for the (3,3) data. This may be a manifestation of a previously observed tendency of NH3–He potential surfaces to underestimate the contribution from parity-conserving collisions in calculated state-to-state rates. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The vibrational spectra of linear BC3 and linear B2C2 in an argon matrix at 10 K have been observed for the first time by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Mixtures of boron and carbon powders were vaporized in a resistively heated (∼3000 K) oven. BC3 was produced during codeposition of the vapors with argon onto a CsI substrate maintained at 10 K; B2C2 was observed only after annealing the matrices. Frequencies measured at 2002.1 and 1512.5 cm−1 have been assigned to the ν1(σ) and ν2(σ) B–C stretching fundamentals of linear BC3 and a frequency measured at 955.0 cm−1 has been assigned to the ν3(σu) stretching fundamental of linear symmetric BC2B. These assignments are based on FTIR measurements of the majority of the BC3 and B2C2 isotopomer frequencies and are consistent with the results from Rittby's collaborative ab initio study. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The (2) 3Πg–A 3Πu system of B2 has been characterized for the first time. A full rotational analysis of the 0–0, 0–1, 1–0, and 1–3 bands has been performed. The molecular parameters are compared with recent high level theoretical calculations and show good agreement. An extensive perturbation of the upper (2) 3Πg state by the (1) 3Πg state was observed. This was most clearly evident for v=0 of the (2) 3Πg state for the 10B11B isotopomer, which is split into two components by the interaction with v=7 of (1) 3Πg. The perturbation interaction exhibited a significant rotational dependence, which was interpreted as arising from a change in the Franck–Condon factors as the rotational contribution to the potential changed. A weak local perturbation was observed in v=1 of the A 3Πu state from a crossing with v=2 of the a 5Σ−u state.

    Notes: Summary. During the first 5 years of a colposcopy clinic established in a London teaching hospital 653 new patients were seen, usually referred because they had had an abnormal cervical smear report suggesting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Of 490 women treated within the district for CIN, 361 (73.7%) underwent radical electrocoagulation diathermy, 91 (18.6%) were treated by cone biopsy, 34 (6.9%) underwent hysterectomy and the other four patients were treated by cryocau-tery. Of the 245 women treated by radical electrocoagulation diathermy who have been followed for at least 12 months, persistent or recurrent disease has been found in only 15, a first time treatment success rate of 93.9%.

    Notes: Steady-state photoluminescence, time-resolved photoluminescence, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been used to study the electrical and chemical properties of GaAs surfaces exposed to inorganic and organic sulfur donors. Despite a wide variation in S2−(aq) concentration, variation of the pH of aqueous HS−solutions had a small effect on the steady-state n-type GaAs photoluminescence intensity, with surfaces exposed to pH=8, 0.1-M HS−(aq) solutions displaying comparable luminescence intensity relative to those treated with pH=14, 1.0-M Na2S⋅9H2O(aq). Organic thiols (R-SH, where R=−CH2CH2SH or −C6H4Cl) dissolved in nonaqueous solvents were found to effect increases in steady-state luminescence yields and in time-resolved luminescence decay lifetimes of (100)-oriented GaAs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that exposure of GaAs surfaces to these organic systems yielded thiols bound to the GaAs surface, but such exposure did not remove excess elemental As and did not form a detectable As2S3 overlayer on the GaAs. These results imply that complete removal of As0 or formation of monolayers of As2S3 is not necessary to effect a reduction in the recombination rate at etched GaAs surfaces. Other compounds that do not contain sulfur but that are strong Lewis bases, such as methoxide ion, also improved the GaAs steady-state photoluminescence intensity. These results demonstrate that a general class of electron-donating reagents can be used to reduce nonradiative recombination at GaAs surfaces, and also imply that prior models focusing on the formation of monolayer coverages of As2S3 and Ga2S3 are not adequate to describe the passivating behavior of this class of reagents. The time-resolved, high level injection experiments clearly demonstrate that a shift in the equilibrium surface Fermi-level energy is not sufficient to explain the luminescence intensity changes, and confirm that HS− and thiol-based reagents induce substantial reductions in the surface recombination velocity through a change in the GaAs surface state recombination rate.
