    Notes: The rate constant kd and its temperature dependence for thermal electron detachment from the azulene negative ion Az−(arrow-right-and-left)ad Az+e was determined by observing, at suitably high temperature, the decay of Az− with time. A pulsed electron beam, high ion source pressure mass spectrometer was used. The reaction mixtures typically contained 4 Torr CH4 as bath gas and azulene and perfluoromethylcyclohexane (C7F14) at pressures of a few mTorr. The C7F14 which has a large electron attachment coefficient was used as electron scavenger in order to suppress the (re)attachment of electrons to Az. The experimental data points for kd could be fitted equally well with the expressions kd =2.5×106 T3/2 (s−1)exp[−14.5 (kcal/mol)/RT] and kd =1.14×1011 (s−1)exp[−15.7 (kcal/mol)/RT]. The activation energies are close to the electron affinity E.A.(Az)=16 kcal/mol obtained in earlier determination from this laboratory. Consistent values for the equilibrium constant K of the attachment–detachment equilibrium can be obtained when K is evaluated from E.A.(Az) and third law entropies of the reactants and from K=ka/kd, where ka and kd are experimentally determined quantities.     Notes: Measurements of the equilibria (1): A−+B=A+B− with a pulsed electron high pressure mass spectrometer lead to ΔG01, ΔH01, and ΔS01. Equilibria involving SF6 as A and perfluoromethylcyclohexane C7F14 provide electron affinities E.A.(SF6)=1.05±0.1 eV and E.A.(C7F14)=1.06±0.15 eV. The kinetics of reactions (1) involving the above two compounds were studied. The rate constants kf for SF−6 +B=SF6+B− were found to increase with exothermicity of the reaction. The temperature dependence for kf was determined. B compounds leading to high exothermicities were associated with kf at the collision limit and essentially no temperature dependence. B of progressively lower electron affinity led to kf below the collision limit and negative temperature dependence, while B with the lowest E.A. but still leading to exothermic reaction produced lowest kf with positive temperature dependence. A model is provided explaining the above behavior. The known large change of geometry between SF−6 and SF6 introduces an internal barrier in the reaction coordinate for the reactions (1) involving SF6.

    Notes: Two species of jute plants Corchorus capsularis L. (cv. JRC 212) and C. olitorius L. (cv. JRO 632) were subjected to water stress for 2 and 4 days by withholding water. The relative water content (RWC) decreased in both plants under water stress but to a greater extent in C. olitorius. The C. olitorius seedlings also showed greater membrane injury than C. capsularis seedlings under water stress as was evident from injury index data. Water stress increased glycolate oxidase (EC 1.1.3.1.) activity more in C. olitorius than in C. capsularis. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1.) and catalase (EC 1.11.1.6.) decreased under water stress and their decrease was higher in C. olitorius than in C capsularis. The level of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation also increased in both plants under water stress and the increase was higher in C. olitorius than in C. capsularis seedlings. Under comparable external water stress, C. capsularis seedlings showed lower membrane damage, lower H2O2 accumulation and lower lipid peroxidation than C. olilorius which may be taken as indicative of higher water stress tolerance capacity of the former.

    Notes: Water-deficit stress (–1.0 MPa through polyethylene glycol 6000 for 2 h) decreased the relative water content (RWC) and leaf water potential (LWP) in the two jute species Corchorus capsularis L. (cv. JRC 212) and C. olitorius L. (cv. JRO 632), more so in the latter. Pretreatment of seeds with 5 mM CaCl2 improved the water uptake capacity without altering stomatal movement, whereas foliar spraying with 0.01 mM ABA reduced transpiration through the reduction of stomatal aperture. A combination of both treatments, i.e. seed treatment followed by foliar spraying, additively improved the water status under water-deficit stress. Efflux of K+ from the guard cells followed by stomatal closure was more rapid in C. capsularis than in C. olitorius under water-deficit stress. Uptake of [32P]-phosphate under water-deficit stress decreased more in C. olitorius than in C. capsularis and treatment of seeds with Ca2+ counteracted this decrease more markedly in the former species. These findings indicate that C. olitorius is more susceptible than C. capsularis to water-deficit stress.

    Notes: Abstract Hydromagnetic turbulent shear flow of viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting fluid between two infinite uniformly porous moving parallel planes in the presence of axial and transverse magnetic field has been studied by the semi-empirical method. The expressions for the mean distributions for velocity and magnetic field for turbulent shear flow have been obtained for both the cases. As particular cases, the results have been obtained if the planes are fixed. The solutions obtained when the magnetic field is axial have been shown graphically for turbulent and laminar flows.

    Notes: Summary Out of 30 cases of abortion and perinatal deaths in a Lipizzaner stud in Austria 10 mares died after having shown central nervous system disturbances, ataxias and paralysis. The etiological agent of this “abortion storm” was equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1). The restriction enzyme pattern of the DNA from 5 isolates recovered from fetuses has been analyzed and compared with the known reference strains of EHV-1, -2, -4 and an Austrian vaccine strain. The DNA restriction profiles of the Lipizzaner isolates as well as of the vaccine strain could be identified as being typical of abortigenic strains with minor variations. Such variations on the molecular biological level of the DNA do not justify characterization of the strains as neurovariants. The vaccine strain differed from other isolates investigated with 4 restriction endonucleases (Bam HI, Bgl II, Eco R I, Kpn I) which was due to a deletion in the unique short segment of the genome. The lack of similar DNA bands in two EHV-1 viruses, causing mild respiratory disease, as well as in the vaccine strain Prevaccinol is suggestive of lowered virulence. In contrast to one Lipizzaner isolate tested (strain Austria IV) the Austrian vaccine strain proved to be of strong neurovirulence for suckling mice.

    Notes: Summary The mortality of young tillers to an extent of 36.5% under optimum cultural conditions was recorded in a field experiment. Attention is drawn to the necessity of minimising this loss and to diverting it towards productive tillers by applying selection pressure. Future yield advances may be achieved by selecting genotypes which tiller moderately in the vegetative phase, most of which survive to produce grains. The character association of each variety under consideration was studied for the suitability towards this objective. A modified selection procedure is suggested which may be advantageously applied to achieve this objective. The proposed new methodology may also be effectively applied to such other cereal crops as barley, triticale and oats.
