    Notes: Abstract Vicia faba plants grown under water deficit were found to have guard cells considerably smaller than those of plants grown under well-watered conditions. Stomala of plants adapted to drought conditions have been observed in past studies to maintain opening at plant water potentials lower than those of plants not so adapted. By employing the geometric interpretation of the mechanical advantage (Wu, Sharpe & Spence, 1985), an anatomical/mechanical basis was found that helps explain how such opening in drought conditions can occur. The geometry and resulting mechanical properties of small stomata, in contrast to larger stomata, give them the capability of opening or maintaining open pores with lower guard cell turgor pressures, relative to the turgor of the surrounding epidermal cells.

    Notes: Restructured steaks manufactured by two comminution methods from prerigor electrically stimulated (PES) beef, nonstimulated counterparts (NES) and postrigor non-electrically stimulated (C) samples were compared. After frozen storage for 0,14, and 42 days, samples were subjectively evaluated for appearance and palatability traits. Objective measurements included Hunter Color, TBA, Kramer, and Instron values. Electrical stimulation reduced peak force but did not consistently improve sensory panel scores. Comminution method did not consistently affect any traits. Results suggested that subjective appearance was affected more by storage time than other treatments and that prerigor beef may be effectively utilized in restructured beef without affecting palatability traits.

    Notes: Abstract Elysia tuca Marcus were collected from the Florida Keys (USA) during 1978–1979, with the aim of clarifying the physiological significance of their kleptoplastids by studying variations in the chlorophyll content of the slugs. The chlorophyll levels in the field populations varied seasonally, with peak levels in autumn. Peak reproductive activity coincided with maximum chlorophyll levels, carbon fixation, and rate of macromolecular conversion of kleptoplastid (= “symbiotic chloroplast”) photosynthates. Changes in chlorophyll level are probably controlled by rate of feeding, which is in turn governed by such factors as algal density and climatic factors (light and temperature). Chlorophyll level and individual weight varied with location, with significant differences between sites in the Upper Keys and the Lower Keys. Environmental factors control benefits of kleptoplastid retention, and suggest that photosynthate yield is an important subsidy of reproductive output.

    Notes: Summary Dopamine relaxes precontracted rabbit isolated splenic arteries via stimulation of dopamine DA1 receptors on the smooth muscle. However, in many preparations, the effect of dopamine is small. In an attempt to increase the effectiveness of dopamine and thus increase the proportion of usable preparations, we have examined the effects, on the sensitivity of dopamine, of the phosphodiesterase inhibitor 3-isobutyl-l-methylxanthine (IBMX) and the adenylate cyclase stimulant forskolin. In tissues pretreated with phenoxybenzamine, and in the presence of propranolol, IBMX (1 µmol/1) or forskolin (0.01 µmol/1) produced a small increase in the sensitivity to dopamine in otherwise insensitive preparations. The maximum relaxation of U-46619-induced tone produced by dopamine was increased to around 50%. However, after treatment with higher concentrations of IBMX (10 µmol/1) or forskolin (0.1 µmol/1), previously insensitive preparations relaxed readily to dopamine with EC50 values in the range 1–3 µmol/1. Similarly, in spontaneously dopamine-sensitive preparations IBMX (1 µmol/1) or forskolin (0.01 µmol/1) produced only a 2–3-fold parallel shift to the left in the dopamine concentration-effect curves. However, higher concentrations of IBMX (10 µmol/1) or forskolin (0.1 µmol/1) produced 10–20-fold parallel shifts to the left in dopamine concentration-effect curves. Higher concentrations of IBMX (100 µmol/1) or forskolin (1 µmol/1) abolished the ability of the spasmogen to contract the preparations. The potency of the dopamine receptor antagonists SCH 23390 and sulpiride, and the potency, relative to dopamine, of the agonists epinine, 6,7-ADTN, N,N-di-n-propyldopamine, and SK&F 38393 were similar in ring preparations treated with IBMX (10 µmol/1) to those experienced previously using untreated strip preparations. This suggests that dopamine-induced relaxation is mediated by the same type of vascular dopamine DA1 receptors whether in the presence or absence of IBMX. SK&F 82526 appeared to act as a partial agonist. In both dopamine-sensitive and dopamine-insensitive splenic artery strip preparations, from which the endothelium had been removed, IBMX (10 µmo1/1) produced a marked increase in the sensitivity to dopamine, which was comparable with that observed in splenic artery ring preparations. This suggests that the increase in sensitivity produced by IBMX in ring preparations is not dependent upon the presence of the vascular endothelium. This study shows that the sensitivity of the rabbit isolated splenic artery to dopamine can be increased by treatment with IBMX or forskolin which supports the view that the relaxant effect of dopamine in this preparation is mediated via activation of adenylate cyclase.

    Notes: Abstract Acidification of lakes and streams can lead to adverse effects on aquatic biota, and the recognition of widespread atmospheric deposition of strong acids in eastern North America has led to considerable concern over its existing and potential impact on th flora and fauna of sensitive (i.e. low alkalinity) systems. While most of the concern has been directed toward the impact on the fisheries resource, it is well documented that all levels of biota are affected (Almer et al., 1974; Likens et al., 1983; Dillon et al., 1984), and full appreciation of the impact of acidification requires examination of all living components of the aquatic ecosystem. Although extensive work has already been conducted in tho Scandinavian countries, there are numerous differences in species between those countries and North America, and a sound appraisal of the threat to North American biota requires comparable work for this continent. Large scale surveys and monitoring programs are under development or are in the early phases of execution by various institutions, but much has already been learned from laboratory and field acidification experiments, and from comparisons of acidic and non-acidic lakes and streams. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results of these studies for several dominant species from several major groups of organisms. We hope to focus attention on the nature and quality of information about the sensitivity of organisms with known or apparent significant ecological roles, identify gaps or weaknesses, and provide insight into the merits and limitations of the various methods of study.
