Notes: Summary The reliability of thermography for the determination of the level of amputation for an ischaemic lower limb was compared with that of the doppler flowmeter and the clinical judgement of an experienced surgeon. The results showed that thermography tended to overestimate the degree of ischaemia and to indicate a higher level of amputation than was necessary. The advantages and the limitations of each method are discussed. It is concluded that the clinical judgement of the surgeon was the most reliable method and that the other investigations are only an adjunct to clinical assessment.

Notes: Summary An animal study was carried out to gain better understanding on the effect of erect posture in the development of the lumbosacral junction. Rhesus monkeys which are able to sit in an upright position were compared with quadrupeds, including rats, rabbits and dogs, whose lumbosacral spines are normally more or less horizontal. The important finding was the presence of the iliolumbar ligament in the rhesus monkey which attached to the last, occasionally the second last, lumbar transverse process and the adjacent iliac wing. A similar ligament was absent in the quadrupeds. We postulate that the stresses created across the lumbosacral junction as a result of the erect posture in the rhesus monkey have played an important role in stimulating the formation of this ligament.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the Hall coefficient, dc electrical conductivity, and magnetoresistance have been made on two highly compensated, plastically bent,n-type InSb samples from liquid helium to room temperature. The number and Hall mobility of charge carriers and the electrical conductivity are greatly affected by plastic bending. The mobility decreases appreciably and the number of charge carriers increases in both the deformed samples. This increase of effective charge carriers can be attributed to the introduction of effective donor centers due to plastic bending. The electrical conductivity in one of the deformed samples increases between the temperature ranges 4.2–15 K and 125–190 K compared to that of the undeformed state of the sample. This unusual increase in σ is attributed to the large increase inn value. The magnetoresistance at 4.2 K is due to impurity-band conduction and is found to be positive. It shows approximately a linear variation with magnetic field in both the deformed samples. The observed behavior of the magnetoresistance at 300 K is consistent with the behavior expected for free electrons. The observed Δρ/ρ at 77.4 K is found to be less than that at 300 K and is explained in terms of the Hall mobility values at these two temperatures.

Notes: Abstract Spatially-focused, high-frequency ultrasonic pulses have been used in the evaluation of the quality of stainless steel tubing pinch welds. Experimentally, echoes from the bond plane were generally too weak to observe, except in bond planes with macrocracking. Correlations were therefore sought between bond quality and the amplitude and spectral features of the back-surface echo that has passed through the bond plane twice. Linear scans of the back-surface echo parallel and perpendicular to the tubing axis were made on pinch welds of four classes of bond quality. Trends, with scatter, were observed between the ultrasonic parameters and bond quality. These experimental results were interpreted using the Stanke-Kino theory of ultrasonic attenuation due to grain scattering to relate the microstructural changes caused by the pinch-weld process to the observed ultrasonic signals. The results illustrate the importance of process-related changes in near-bond microstructure in attempts to nondestructively determine bond strength.

Notes: Abstract: This study attempts to determine if γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may be a transmitter of cochlear nerve fibers projecting from the cochlea to the cochlear nucleus, and of centrifugal fibers projecting to the cochlear nucleus via the trapezoid body and the acoustic striae of the medulla. The uptake and the electrically evoked release of exogenous [14C]GABA were measured, in vitro, in the three major subdivisions of the guinea pig cochlear nucleus: the anteroventral, posteroventral, and dorsal cochlear nuclei. These activities were compared using unlesioned animals, animals with bilateral cochlear ablations, and animals whose trapezoid body and acoustic striae were interrupted on the right side of the medulla. Subdivisions from unlesioned animals took up [14C]GABA, achieving concentrations in the tissues that were 11–19 times that in the medium. Electrical stimulation evoked a Ca2+-dependent release of [14C]GABA from each subdivision. Bilateral cochlear ablation, which presumably destroyed the cochlear nerve fibers, had no effect on [14C]GABA uptake and release. Section of the trapezoid body and the acoustic striae on the right side of the medulla typically severed all known connections of the right posteroventral and dorsal cochlear nuclei with the rest of the brain, but left intact many connections involved with the right anteroventral cochlear nucleus. This lesion partially depressed [14C]GABA uptake and release in the right posteroventral and dorsal cochlear nuclei, but not in the right anteroventral cochlear nucleus. These findings suggest that one or more of the centrifugal tracts projecting to the cochlear nucleus may be GABAergic, 88% or more of the cochlear nerve fibers probably are not GABAergic, and some neurons of the cochlear nucleus are probably GABAergic.

Notes: Abstract: Glial cells have been shown previously to release factors that promote survival of central and peripheral neurons [neuronotrophic factors (NTFs)]. We have investigated the release of NTFs by C6 cells, a rat glioma cell line, under different modes of conditioning. Media conditioned in the presence or absence of serum [C6 cell conditioned media (C6CMs)] were analyzed using biological, biochemical, and immunological assays. We report that (a) nuclear and cytoskeletal proteins were not present in C6CMs, indicating that C6CM proteins result from release by C6 cells rather than from cell death; (b) C6CM contained 1–3 μg protein/ml, corresponding to a secretion rate of about 0.5 pg protein per cell and day; (c) C6CM contained the neurite-promoting factor laminin and low amounts of nerve growth factor; (d) the presence of fetal calf serum in the culture medium was essential for synthesis and release of NTFs; and (e) our C6CM contained at least three NTFs differing by their temporal secretory patterns and three NTFs differing by biochemical properties, indicating that C6 cells produce and secrete six different NTFs. Within these, nerve growth factor seems to be the only established NTF.

Notes: Summary. Uterine activity was measured during the second stage of normal labour in 20 patients with and 31 patients without epidural analgesia. There was a significantly lower uterine activity integral (UAI) in patients having epidural analgesia, and it is suggested t h a t this may contribute to the increased rate of instrumental delivery associated with epidural analgesia.
