Notes: Abstract. During field research bream were marked by cutaneous injection of liquid latex dye. In the first week after marking a temporary inflammatory response could be seen in the tissue of the scale pouches. However, there was no evidence of tissue response to latex in bream recaptured 4–6 months after marking and secondary infections at the site of marking were not observed. Latex was found to be a harmless method of marking bream.

Notes: Abstract Intestinal obstruction in the early postoperative period may be difficult to diagnose clinically and on plain abdominal radiographs with failure to distinguish obstruction from ileus. During the last 11 years we have examined 14 patients with the enteroclysis technique (small bowel barium enema) for suspected early postoperative small intestinal obstruction. Evidence of obstruction was demonstrated in all cases, the site of obstruction was clearly shown in most patients, and the cause identified in 5.

Notes: Abstract This UK paper on multiparty litigation looks at the Opren case. This concerned an anti-arthritic drug licensed in the UK between 1980 and 1982. While a number of drug users died, the most common adverse reaction was photosensitivity. The main legal action involved almost 1,500 plaintiffs and seven defendants. In the early summer of 1987 a court ruling on the funding of the action meant that 500 of the plaintiffs might have to withdraw. With the help of a multimillionaire and a media campaign, the parties reached a controversial settlement at the end of 1987. This paper focuses on the plaintiffs' case, the way the litigation proceeded through the courts and the nature of the settlement. It goes on to assess the problems the case highlighted in court procedures, legal aid and liability for defective drugs.

Notes: Summary We describe a modified perfusion and collagenase dissociation in a trypsinizing flask for hepatocyte isolation from adult or juvenile catfish liver. When cells isolated in this manner are allowed to attach to plastic culture dishes in serum-free medium, good viabilities and prolonged function can be obtained.
