Notes: In spite of the large utilization of LiNbO3 in optical devices, its electro-optic coefficients are not perfectly known. We show in the present paper that not taking into account the temperature dependence of the linear spontaneous birefringence can lead to an erroneous determination of the electro-optic coefficients. The electro-optic coefficient rc of LiNbO3 has been determined by an accurate technique issued from the Sénarmont method. At room temperature, rc=19.9×10−12 m/V, with an estimated error of ±5%. The measurements are performed for values of the dc applied electric field as a function of the temperature around room temperature. We point out the drastic influence on the electro-optic response of the spontaneous birefringence variation due to the temperature. Accurate and reproducible values of the electro-optic coefficients are obtained only if this dependence is taken into account.

Notes: We present an experimental study of anionic reorientational dynamics in Cu(NO3)2 and Ca(NO3)2 aqueous solutions. The anion reorientational autocorrelation time τor has been obtained by Fourier band shape analysis of the Raman 1050 cm−1 N–O stretching vibration line and by a multiple Lorentzian fitting of the depolarized Rayleigh wing spectrum. Its evolution as a function of solute concentration and of the nature of the counterion present (Cu2+, Ca2+) has been analyzed. Deviations from the Stokes–Einstein proportionality relation between Raman reorientational correlation times and the values of shear viscosity of the system have been used to obtain the microscopic structure contribution to the viscosity itself. From the depolarized Rayleigh wing spectra we have been able to investigate the contributions of both water and the nitrate ion to the reorientational relaxation in the solutions and to assess the contribution of collective effects.

Notes: Fourier band shape analysis is applied to obtain the reorientation time correlation functions in the short time limit from the Raman spectra of some ordered nematic liquid crystals. New equations for the simultaneous determination of the static order parameters 〈P2〉 and 〈P4〉, and the tumbling diffusion coefficient Dr⊥ are proposed. Their applicability and accuracy are demonstrated by Raman scattering measurements on two prototype aligned mesogens, namely 4, n-pentyl 4'-methoxytolane (PMT) and 4,n-octylethoxytolane (OET). The molecular dynamics in the investigated aligned nematics is also discussed.

Notes: Summary In this letter we propose a possible general mechanism ofT c enhancement in nonhomogeneous superconductors in terms of the anomalies of electron-phonon dynamics in fractal systems. The high-T c superconductivity in oxyde ceramics is interpreted within such framework.

Notes: Abstract The effect produced by veratrine on transmembrane potential was investigated in five distinct regions of the isolated rat diaphragm blocked with eitherd-tubocurarine or α-bungarotoxin. It was found that small (0.4μg/ml) and large (2.0μg/ml) doses of veratrine depolarize only two or three of these regions. With the use of a very large (10.0μg/ml) dose depolarization occured in all five regions of the diaphragm but the effect was much larger in those areas of the muscle fibre membrane which were selectively depolarized by the smaller ones. These results clearly indicate either an unequal distribution of sodium channels activated by veratrine or differences in sodium channel density in distinct areas of the muscle fibre membrane. Supersensitivity of veratrinized muscles to potassium was confirmed. However, the sensitiveness to the depolarizing action of potassium was only increased in the regions of the diaphragm partially depolarized by veratrine. This suggests that partial depolarization of the muscle fibre membrane was actually the cause of the supersensitivity. The possible involvement of potassium and of the unequal depolarization of the muscle fibre membrane in the veratrine response is considered.
