    Notes: Electron temperature fluctuations have been investigated in the edge region of the Caltech research tokamak [S. J. Zweben and R. W. Gould, Nucl. Fusion 25, 171 (1985)], and an upper limit to this fluctuation level was found at T˜e/Te (approximately-less-than)15%. This measurement, together with previous measurements of density and electric and magnetic field fluctuations, allows a unique comparison of the heat transport resulting from three basic turbulent mechanisms: (1) heat flux from the particle flux resulting from microscopic density and electric field fluctuations; (2) thermal conduction resulting from microscopic temperature and electric field fluctuations; and (3) thermal conduction resulting from microscopic magnetic field fluctuations. The measurements indicate that, in the edge regions, the electron heat transport caused by the measured turbulence-induced particle flux is comparable to or greater than that caused by the thermal conduction associated with the electron temperature and electric field fluctuations, and is significantly greater than that resulting from the measured magnetic fluctuations. This electron heat loss caused by the plasma turbulence is found to be an important electron energy loss mechanism in the edge regions.

    Notes: Plasma flow to an obstacle is examined using the two-fluid equations. In this model the obstacle is assumed to be a two-dimensional strip that extends to infinity in the y direction (slab geometry). An obstacle inserted into a magnetized plasma will cast a "shadow'' along the magnetic field lines. The natural collection length of such an obstacle is a measure of the length of its shadow. This study shows that in a typical fusion tokamak, where cs/Ωcid(very-much-less-than)1 (Ωci, cs are the ion cyclotron frequency and the ion acoustic speed, respectively, d is the half-width of the strip), the particle collection length of an obstacle can be approximated as L(parallel)=0.23csd2/ D⊥, if D⊥/ csd (very-much-less-than)1; or 0.30d, if D⊥/ csd (very-much-greater-than)1. For the cases examined in this study, the inclusion of the electron–ion collisional drag parallel to B0 changes the solution only by an insignificant amount.

    Notes: The axonal transport of putrescine or its polyamine derivatives spermidine or spermine is a subject of some debate. We investigated this question by injecting [3H]putrescine into the lumbar spinal cord of the rat and measuring the accumulation of radioactivity central to ligatures placed on intact and regenerating sciatic nerves. In normal nerves, approximately twice as much radio activity built up proximal to these ligatures 2 or 3 days after injection than at more distal ligatures used to control for accumulation of radioactivity which might be due to tissue damage alone. In regenerating nerves the amount of radioactivity accumulating at the ligature was approx imately five times that at the distal ligature and two to three times greater than in intact nerves. The identity of the radioactivity in regenerating nerves, determined on an amino acid analyzer, was found to be primarily spermidine and an unknown compound that migrated as a frontal elution peak. Autoradiographic analysis showed that the radioactivity was largely confined to axons, but a significant amount of the silver grains was associated with Schwann cells and myelin sheaths surrounding labeled axons in both intact and regenerating nerves. The data indicate that polyamine derivatives of putrescine are transported axonally in rat sciatic nerves, and some of this transported material accumulates in Schwann cells surrounding the labeled axons. These processes are apparently augmented during regeneration of the injured axons.

    Notes: Abstract: The metabolism of phosphoinositides in rat sciatic nerves in vivo during electrical stimulation was studied. Nerves were prelabeled by injection of [2-3H]-myo-inositol alone for periods of 2 and 20 h or together with [32P]orthophosphate for 2 h and then electrically stimulated (100 Hz) for 5 or 20 min. Contralateral unstimulated nerve served as the control. When tritiated myo-inositol was used alone for prelabeling the nerves, approximately 6% and 14% of the label was incorporated into lipids after 2 h and 20 h, respectively. Both 5 and 20 min of electrical stimulation caused an insignificant change in the percentage of radioactivity recovered in lipids from the nerves prelabeled with either myo-inositol or with a mixture of myo-inositol and phosphate. The proportion of label associated with phosphoinositides of nerves prelabeled with myo-inositol for both 2 h and 20 h showed an increase in phosphatidyl-inositol-4-phosphate at the expense of phosphatidylinositol in stimulated nerves. Similar results were obtained with nerves prelabeled for 2 h with a mixture of [32P]orthophosphate and [2-3H]myo-inositol. No significant changes in the radioactivity associated with water-soluble inositol phosphates were found in stimulated versus control nerves.

    Notes: Abstract. The short-term ecological effects of a simulated large-scale regulation release (360 1061d-1), over a 5-day period, from an impoundment into the Afon Vyrnwy were investigated. A dramatic increase in the density and biomass of the fish fauna occurred at the time of the release. Elevated discharge rate was considered the primary factor responsible for the enhancement of the fauna. This increase in density and biomass of the fish fauna was suggested as being the result of fish displaced by tru-released water moving upstream to regain station after the flow had abated. Implications of these observations in the design of operating guidelines for use at regulating reservoirs are discussed.
