Summary The chemimechanical pulping (CMP) of sound balsam fir and the subsequent peroxide bleaching of the CMP pulp were investigated using solid state 13C CP/MAS NMR. A parallel study was made of a CMP pulp produced from spruce budworm killed balsam fir. Changes in the lignin and hemicellulose components were readily evident. The residual lignin and carbohydrate macromolecules in dead balsam fir CMP appeared to be the same as those in the sound wood CMP, before and after bleaching.
