Notes: Silicon (111) surfaces that were cleaned and characterized in ultrahigh vacuum were exposed to carbonyl difluoride. After adsorption of COF2, the silicon crystal was heated to 625 °C resulting in a surface etching reaction as evidenced by the desorption of silicon tetrafluoride. Si(111) surfaces covered with a native oxide layer were also exposed to carbonyl difluoride. Dissociation of COF2, using high fluences from the CO2 laser, caused etching of the SiO2 surface. Volatile SiF4(g) was detected by transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Two mechanisms, for the thermally enhanced etching of silicon by COF2 and the photochemically promoted etching of silicon dioxide by COF2, are proposed.

Notes: We have carried out stochastic trajectory simulations of the scattering of argon clusters, Arn, n=5 to 26, from a Pt(111) surface. At incident energies of 0.1 and 0.5 eV per atom, the clusters fragment almost completely into individual atoms. Some atoms remain trapped on the surface, but the majority scatter. For the larger clusters, the angular distributions of the scattered atoms peak near the surface tangent, and are almost independent of the incident angle. The mean kinetic energy of atoms is largest for those scattered near the surface tangent, and decreases as the scattering angle approaches the surface normal. These trends are in qualitative accord with the results of experimental studies of cluster scattering from surfaces. A multiple binary collision mechanism involving atom–atom collisions within the cluster as well as atom–surface collisions is responsible for this behavior.

Notes: The aim of the study was to analyse the concentration levels of mercury and copper in urine, blood/blood plasma and saliva in relation to intra-oral electrical activity. Five Swedish Navy divers took part in the study in order to determine whether working submerged with electrical cutting equipment produced changes in the presence and level of oral galvanism and whether this posed a serious occupational health risk. The investigation concluded that the risk of seriously increased intra-oral electrical activity during welding or cutting activities was small. Development of the study is suggested, with long-term sampling of urine and blood samples of divers supported.

Notes: Experimental measurements of the dynamics of the collisions between N2 van der Waals clusters and metallic surfaces are discussed. Large N2 van der Waals clusters are formed by high pressure nozzle expansions of pure N2 and N2 seeded in helium. Angular distributions and rotational energy distributions of the fragments of these clusters resulting from impact with well characterized silver and iron surfaces were obtained using electron beam induced fluorescence. Angular distributions were characterized by tangent shifted scattering lobes, and rotational energies which are largest at the surface normal. The dependence of the angular distributions on N2 fraction in the seeded beam, expansion backing pressure, and surface structure, composition, and temperatures were investigated.

Notes: Abstract The significance of mammography in the detection of contralateral primary breast cancer was evaluated in 55 patients with bilateral breast disease. Fifteen (65%) of 23 patients in the synchronous group and 16 (50%) of 32 patients in the metachronous group had clinically occult carcinoma in the opposite breast. Excluding the 2 malignancies discovered by prophylactic mastectomy, mammography alone was responsible for the detection of 29 (52.7%) nonpalpable, contralateral breast carcinomas. The whole series of 110 malignant breasts comprised 41 nonpalpable carcinomas, of which 12 were noninvasive [ductal carcinoma in situ (7) and lobular carcinoma in situ (5)] and the remaining 29 were invasive carcinomas, either ductal of various types (25) or lobular (4). With regard to the évaluable axillary nodes, 20 (54.1%) of 37 palpable breast cancers and only 3 (11.5%) of 26 nonpalpable breast carcinomas had positive lymph nodes. The multicentricity rate was particularly high in synchronous tumors (70.6%), and in invasive lobular (73.3%) and noninvasive (75%) carcinomas. The favorable 5- and 10-year survival of patients, both in synchronous and metachronous bilateral primary breast cancer, justify that they be treated with aggressive optimism.

Notes: Abstract We describe a patient who developed pyoderma gangrenosum during the remission phase of acute myeloid leukaemia whilst receiving maintenance therapy with methotrexate and 6-mercaptopurine. The spontaneous resolution of these skin lesions following discontinuation of chemotherapy suggests that these drugs may be of major significance in the aetiology of pyoderma gangrenosum. Nevertheless, 27 months later, a relapse of the leukaemia followed. Although pyoderma gangrenosum occurred during clinical remission, we cannot rule out a synergism of leukaemia and chemotherapy in its pathogenesis.

Notes: Abstract The prognostic significance of progesterone receptor activity (PgR) with regard to the estimated relapse-free survival (RFS) was studied in 350 one-center patients with primary breast cancer. All receptor assays were performed in one laboratory; PgR levels 〉10 fmol/mg protein were considered positive. Univariate as well as multivariate statistical analyses were used to examine the prognostic significance of several variables. Eighty-nine of the 350 patients received adjuvant CMF chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil). The median observation period was 69 months (range 12–125 months). In the group of 261 patients who did not receive adjuvant CMF, the PgR-status lacked prognostic significance; only the lymph node status significantly affected the RFS (p〈0.00001). In contrast, in the CMF-treated group of patients, the PgR-status was the most powerful predictor of recurrence (p〈0.0001). The menopausal and the lymph-node status increased the predictive value of PgR (p〈0.001). Premenopausal CMF-treated patients with PgR+ tumors had a significantly longer RFS than those with PgR− tumors (p〈0.02). The present data urge the need for a reappraisal of the prognostic significance of PgR and of the mechanism of action of adjuvant chemotherapy in primary breast cancer.

Notes: Summary Sib content of F1 hybrid seed lots obtained from crossing four highly self incompatible brussels sprout lines was examined at two locations for four years. Parental combinations accounted for by far the greatest proportion of the total variation observed. Significant second and third order interactions terms suggest complex interactions between parental genotype, years, and locations. Attempts to interpret these data in terms of the regression model of Finlay & Wilkenson (1963), were unsuccessful.

Notes: Abstract Pulmonary hydrogen gas (H2) concentrations were used to assess the malabsorption of dietary nutrients in preruminating calves inoculated withCryptosporidium sp. Normal values were established in five control calves and seven calves (principals) were inoculated with 1.0 ×105 Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts. Hydrogen concentrations and wet fecal weights were measured at three stages: beforeCryptosporidium sp. inoculation (stage 1), three days after the onset of diarrhea (stage 2), and after the resolution of diarrhea (stage 3). Mean end-breath and total-breath H2 concentrations in the principal calves were higher (P〈0.025 andP〈 it0.05) for stage 2, when compared to control values. Both end-breath and total-breath H2 concentrations were increased (P〈0.001 andP〈0.025, respectively) in the principal calves during stage 2 when compared to values obtained for stages 1 and 3. Concurrently,Cryptosporidium sp. infection was associated with increased (P=0.06) fecal output during stage 2, only. The increased H2 concentrations and cumulative fecal output show thatCryptosporidium sp. caused malabsorption of fermentable nutrients.

Notes: We report the development of a capillary gas chromatographic method, superior to existing packed column methods, for the analysis of highly brominated additive fire-retardants, including decabromodiphenyl ether (1) and decabromodiphenoxyethane (II). Neither compound has been analyzed previously by capillary GC, and there are no published methods for (II). For (I), the new method is 5-10 times faster than an analogous packed column method, and it has 100 times lower detection limits and twice the precision of a gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric method. For (II), the capillary method is 30-50% faster than an unpublished liquid chromatographic method. The greater efficiency of the capillary method makes possible the complete resolution (R ≥ 1.25) of structurally very similar compounds (e.g. compound (II) and its Br9Cl1 and Br8Cl2 analogues). With the new method, commercial preparations of (I) and (II) can be rapidly analyzed, and samples from combustion and pyrolysis experiments can be evaluated for compositional changes.
