Notes: Studies were carried out to determine the protein quality of whole dried honey bees (56.8% crude protein, 11.1% chitin) and honey bee protein concentrate (64.2% crude protein, 0% chitin). The levels of most of the indispensable amino acids were higher in honey bee protein concentrate than in whole dried bees. The true protein digestibility was higher (P 〈 0.05) in the concentrate (94.3%) than in whole dried honey bees (71.5%), as were the amino acid availabilities. PER and NPU were 2.47 and 62, respectively, in the concentrate and 1.50 and 42.5, respectively, in whole dried honey bees. The removal of chitin following alkali extraction of whole dried honey bees is primarily responsible for the improvement in protein quality.

Notes: Summary The peristaltic activity in 36 normal pig pyeloureters in 19 pigs was investigated during various steady flow rates. Flow rates of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 20 ml/ureter/min resulted in a mean frequency of 4.5, 4.9, 4.4, 4.2, 4.2 and 5.1 peristaltic events/min respectively. The frequency of peristalsis was thus independent of flow rate and also of baseline pressure but showed a weak relation to the magnitude of the mean perfusion pressure. The peristaltic activity is generally constant at all physiological flow rates in the steady state. This standardized study therefore confirms previous observations in showing that urine transport mainly is regulated by changes in the bolus size.

Notes: Summary To evaluate influence of age on symptomatology and objective parameters in benign prostatic hypertrophy, preoperative findings in 199 unselected patients during one year were analysed. Symptoms of bladder instability increased with age, as did incidence of uninhibited detrusor contractions and bladder trabeculation, whereas maximum urine flow and obstructive complaints decreased, although prostatic size was the same. In the oldest age groups only was increasing prostatic size associated with increasing bladder trabeculation. Age related changes in neurological control and in the structure of the bladder may be involved, and the present results suggest age to be an important factor in the interpretation of symptoms and objective findings in prostatic hypertrophy.

Notes: Summary Quantitative structural studies were performed in kidney biopsy specimens from 24 long-term Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic patients with persistent albuminuria due to diabetic glomerulopathy. Ten patients were receiving antihypertensive treatment, and among the remaining patients the mean blood pressure was 142/91 mmHg (SD = 11/9). The urinary albumin excretion rate showed a range from 100 to 5494 μg/min (geometric mean 688 μg/min.) Glomerular filtration rate also showed a wide range, from supranormal to markedly decreased values (128 to 28 ml·min−1· (1.73 m2)−1, mean 75). The filtration surface (interface between capillary and urinary space) per total number of nephrons (open+occluded) was estimated by combined light- and electron microscopy. The percentage occluded glomeruli as well as structural quantities in the open glomeruli were taken into account in this estimate. A highly significant correlation was seen between glomerular filtration rate and filtration surface per nephron (r=0.77, p〈10−4). The percentage occluded glomeruli contributed significantly to the variation in glomerular filtration rate (for this relationship tested separately r=-0.78, p〈10−5). The volume of open glomeruli was even larger than that seen in early diabetic glomerular hypertrophy and tended to increase with the percentage of glomerular closure, indicating that a compensatory hypertrophy might have taken place. In the open glomeruli the filtration surface constituted a smaller percent of total capillary surface (the remaining part facing the mesangial regions) than in early diabetic patients and control subjects. Our study has demonstrated that reduced glomerular filtration surface is closely associated with reduced glomerular filtration rate in Type 1 diabetic patients with diabetic nephropathy.

Notes: Summary Twenty-four-hour heart rate control by verapamil given as conventional tablets t.d.s., or as a new slow release formulation once daily, has been compared in an open cross-over trial. Eight patients with chronic atrial fibrillation and one with chronic atrial flutter were studied outside hospital. Trough serum concentration of verapamil did not differ during the two dosage regimens (59 ng/ml — conventional formulation and 49.3 ng/ml — slow release tablet). The average serum concentration of digoxin in the patients was not changed. Compared to the control phase, both dosage regimens significantly and equally reduced individual and average heart rates throughout the entire 24-h period. A positive correlation between the serum concentration of verapamil and the relative increase in average R-R interval was demonstrated. It is concluded that dosage t.d.s. with conventional tablets of verapamil or once daily with the slow release formulation gave the same antiarrhythmic efficacy over 24 h, and was associated with equal trough serum concentrations of verapamil.
