Notes: Nimodipine is a compound that is thought to block the influx of calcium through channels in vascular smooth muscle. This paper describes a double-blind parallel-group comparison of 40 mg nimodipine three times a day and placebo. Sixty-eight patients received treatment after a run-in period of 2 months, and of these, 57 completed 8 weeks or more of the trial. All but five of these completed the full 6-month trial. The nimodipine and placebo groups showed no significant differences in the frequency of attacks. severity or duration of headache, or gastrointestinal or other symptoms.

Notes: Situations arise where it would be advantageous if ultrasonic measurements could be performed at two distinct frequencies simultaneously. Such a scheme is hampered by the need for a method whereby the sample impedance at both frequencies can be matched to that of the driver electronics. Such a method is presented in this note.

Notes: We report the first implementation of an in situ glow discharge cleaning procedure for the removal of carbon contamination from x-ray optical surfaces. In situ cleaning obviates the need for the time-consuming and costly process of element removal, cleaning or repolishing, remounting, and realignment usually necessary to restore x-ray optics to their original condition. The apparatus required is quite simple and can easily be fitted to most existing UHV (ultrahigh vacuum) mirror boxes or monochromators. Results with several monochromators at the Brookhaven National Labs National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) show that better than original performance can be obtained at the carbon K edge, since the elements are not exposed to atmosphere after in situ cleaning and do not accumulate the adventitious carbon layer associated with more traditional methods. Possible improvements and extensions of the technique are also described.

Notes: We have developed a new compact water-cooled beam position monitor for use at the NSLS X-13 Insertion Device Development beamline, currently fitted with a high-power, high-brightness soft-x-ray undulator. We describe the novel geometry of the monitor and present the results of tests which explore its sensitivity, stability, and linearity. These results were obtained on the NSLS Beamline Research and Development white light beamline, U14B, on the VUV ring and suggest that beam position monitors of this type might be adapted to other facilities with similar spectral characteristics.

Notes: A closed-cycle refrigerator/cryostat system for use in ultrasonic studies of electron irradiation damaged bulk specimens is described. The closed-cycle refrigerator provides a convenient means for long-term (several days) sample irradiation at low temperatures. A neon filled "thermal diode'' is employed to permit efficient cooling, via liquid helium, of the sample below the base temperature of the refrigerator.

Notes: Exogenous agents may perturb development during the embryonic period and adversely affect the formation of organs. However, adverse effects on development are not limited to the embryonic period nor are the manifestations restricted solely to outright gross structural malformation, but may instead be expressed as a decrement or aibberration of postnatal function. Susceptibility to altered development may extend well into the postnatal period. Studies of functional parameters in several organ systems have demonstrated the broad-based susceptibility, subtlety of expression and potential of long-lasting effects of altered development assessed by physiologic assays. Adverse effects on functional development, whether in the CNS, reproductive, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, respiratory, or immune systems, etc., merit continuing investigation. From the viewpoint of risk estimation and hazard detection, evaluations of postnatal functional parameters may be relevant for several reasons. First, such parameters may serve as low-dose triggers. Second, they may be useful as a focal point for epidemiological studies. Finally, a more thorough understanding of the degree and magnitude of such postnatal functional deficits is needed since an adverse maternal effect may be transient, considered acceptable, or unperceived, but the effect on the conceptus may be permanent and severe. The immune and respiratory systems are discussed as two examples of how subtle and protean adverse effects on functional development may be.

Notes: The aim of this study was to examine whether soluble neoepitopes of activated C3 (C3b, iC3b, C3c) and C9 are produced by human alveolar macrophages cultured in serum-free medium. There was a significant and inhibitable production of C3 and C9 neoepitopes and C9 by the macrophages from all donors, as detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays based on monoclonal (bH6, aE11) and polyclonal (anti-C9) antibodies. A strong donor-dependent variation in the levels of the C3 neoepitope and C9 (five- to sevenfold) and the C9 neoepitope (twofold) was found. After 1 day (24 h) of incubation, the complement levels were largely unaltered. The presence of an exogenous alternative pathway activator (agarose beads) reduced the amount of soluble complement because of binding to the agarose. However, the relative fraction of C9 neoepitope versus C9 increased (two- to threefold), due to agarose mediated activation of C9. The results demonstrate activation of the complement system in serum-free alveolar macrophage cultures, irrespective of the presence of a known complement activator.
