    Notes: The physical and chemical properties of bulk polymers are well understood and have been measured exhaustively for numerous systems, but the properties of polymer surfaces are quite often different from those observed in the bulk and are usually not as easily measurable. Since many polymer properties vary with molecular weight, it is of interest to determine whether or not there is any segregation in a homopolymer system based on molecular weight. In particular, does the surface of a polymer sample have the same molecular weight composition as the bulk? The current work answers this question for a polystyrene system. Through the use of secondary ion mass spectrometry and tagged polystyrene, it has been shown that surface and bulk molecular weight composition are indistinguishable within the limits of the experimental method's sensitivity. The sensitivity of the technique is documented using samples artificially created with different surface and bulk molecular weight compositions.

    Notes: To elucidate the role of chemical interactions in the promotion of metal-polymer adhesion, a poly(ethylene terephalate)/copper system was studied. Surface photografting of unsaturated monomers containing different chemical functional groups onto a three-mil poly(ethylene terephthalate) film provided a means of examining a variety of copper-polymer interfaces. Initial graft verification was accomplished via contact angle measurements. Adhesion strengths to vacuum-deposited copper were determined using 90° peel tests. Graft analysis, as well as investigation of the interfacial interaction between copper and the grafted moieties, was accomplished using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

    Notes: The effect of polymeric molecular weight and molecular weight distribution on pressure-sensitive adhesive performance was studied in a model system of commercial polyisobutylenes. Molecular weight was characterized by size exclusion chromatography and membrane osmometry. Pressure sensitive adhesive performance was assessed by shear, peel, and probe tack testing based on standardized test methods. Lower molecular weight polyisobutylenes (Mw 〈 600,000) are successful in peel and probe tack testing due to their ability to flow quickly and wet the substrate test surface. They do not function as well in shear, however, where the polymer must resist flow under a load. High molecular weight species, by contrast, perform well in shear resistance tests and less successfully in peel and probe tack testing. Where high and low molecular weight polyisobutylenes are blended to broaden the molecular weight distribution while maintaining constant weight average molecular weight, adhesive performance in shear, peel, and probe tack are improved. All of the adhesive properties tested were found to have their foundation in some fundamental rheological properties of the polymers (e.g., shear viscosity and tensile creep compliance). This suggests the use of fundamental rheological characterization for screening of adhesive formulations over more empirical adhesive testing methods.

    Notes: A Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer equipped with a microbeam accessary and a linear translation stage with a pinhole mask was used to monitor the diffusion of antioxidant in crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) matrices crosslinked with controlled amounts of crosslinking agent. Integration of the peak area for a characteristic peak of the antioxidant at different positions along the sample indicated the changing concentration due to diffusion within 30 days. This technique allowed us to study an antioxidant with a molecular weight in the thousand range. The diffusion coefficients calculated were in the order of 10-11 - 10-10 cm2·s-1. It was observed that the diffusion constants dramatically changed with the crosslinking density.

    Notes: A study of the changes in a LARC-TPI adhesive during a three-stage thermal curing process has been conducted. The multistage curing conditions followed commonly used industrial curing specifications. Using thermogravimetric analysis plus gas chromatography plus mass spectrometry, the gasses involved in the curing were identified. Water analysis was performed by two separate techniques and supplementary information gathered using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. These analytical studies permitted determination of the degree of cure at each stage and to determine whether any degradation is taking place under curing condition.

    Notes: The use of multidetector size exclusion chromatography is described for studying oxidation in styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymer films. It is shown that exposure of these films to atmospheric oxygen causes surface oxidation of the isoprene midblocks and that the antioxidant system used is incapable of preventing this. Higher temperature exposure initially merely accelerates the surface reaction but is followed after an induction period by severe bulk-phase degradation. The implications of ambient temperature surface oxidation of SIS-based pressure-sensitive adhesives are discussed.

    Notes: The morphological changes that occur in molded phenolic specimens during long-term heat aging tests have been observed in optical and scanning electron microscopy. The changes in morphology include shrinking and the formation of both cracks and charred zones in the phenolic matrix. The relationship of these morphological changes to weight losses and flexural strength losses was demonstrated.
