Notizen: Dielectric measurements were performed on liquid and solid (CF4)1−x (CMF3)x with M=H, Cl, and Br. The dielectric behavior of the polar molecules in the liquid state is well described by an Onsager equation. At the melting point, pure hydrogenated and brominated fluoromethanes condense into dipolar rigid phases, while pure tetrafluoromethane forms a plastic crystal. CClF3 exhibits dipolar relaxational phenomena in the solid state. The data indicate that near the melting point this compound is close to a transition into a plastic phase. Mixtures of CF4 with CHF3 and CBrF3 exhibit monotectic phase diagrams with a limited solubility in the liquid state and complete immiscibility in the solid state. However, formation of mixed crystals is found in (CF4)1−x (CClF3)x which exhibits a eutectic phase diagram.

Notizen: A coaxial air line was constructed to connect a radio-frequency impedance analyzer and a temperature-stabilized sample holder. It is suitable for dielectric measurements in the frequency range 1 MHz–1 GHz and at temperatures between 10 and 450 K. The dielectric dispersion of Fe-doped BaTiO3 and Na-doped KCN is presented. The results demonstrate the capability of this setup when investigating materials with high as well as with low dielectric constants.

Notizen: Abstract Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the Kondo lattice CeCu2Ge2 were performed. AtT N=4.1 K an incommensurate magnetic order develops with an ordering wave vectorq 0=(0.28, 0.28, 0.54) and an ordered moment µ s =0.74 µB. The crystalline electric field splits the 4f 1-J-multiplet of the Ce ion into a ground state doublet and a quartet at 191 K. The wave function of the ground state yields an ordered moment of 1.54µB. Thus, due to the onset of the formation of a Kondo singlet the magnetic moment is considerably reduced. The magnetic relaxation rate Λ was investigated via quasielastic neutron scattering. The temperature dependence of Λ(T) is characteristic of heavy-fermion systems with a high temperature square root dependence and a limiting low temperature value, yielding a Kondo temperatureT K≈10K. The quasielastic component of the scattered neutron intensities persists down to the lowest temperatures, well belowT N. This quasielastic line is regarded as a characteristic feature of heavy-fermion systems and corresponds to the enhanced value of the linear term of the specific heat.

Notizen: Abstract (NaCl)1−x(NaCN)x mixed crystals with CN-concentrationsx of 0.87, 0.76, 0.71 and 0.65 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Apart from the cubic room temperature phase, a rhombohedral and an orthorhombic phase have been identified. In addition a glass state has been observed which is characterized by a strong broadening of the cubic powder lines. The phase diagram shows a wide coexistence gap between the non-cubic phases and the glass state.

Notizen: Abstract Neutron scattering studies in (KBr)1−x(KCN)x mixed crystals are presented utilizing powder diffraction, single crystal diffraction and time-of-flight techniques. Forx〉0.6 (KBr)1−x(KCN)x crystals exhibit ferroelastic and ferroelectric low-temperature phases. Crystals withx〈0.6 undergo transitions into an orientational glass state. Here we present a detailed phase diagram including new results for x=0.85 and x=0.65. For the latter system a stable rhombohedral low-temperature phase has been detected where the orientational disorder of the plastic phase is only partly removed and quadrupolar relaxations between three body diagonals are still possible. From the powder diffraction experiments we determined further the concentration dependence of the static Debye-Waller factors which can be explained by an interplay of the rotation-translation and the rotation-random strain coupling. With single crystal diffraction techniques we studied the diffuse scattered intensities which are directly related to the order parameter of the glass state. The temperature dependence of the quasielastic intensities near the critical concentration shows a strong increase forT〈110K indicative for a freezing-in of shear fluctuations which is a characteristic feature of a non-ergodic instability. This phenomenon appears for ordering (x=0.65) and for non-ordering, glassy compounds. A further anomaly in (KBr)0.43(KCN)0.57 at 75 K is interpreted in terms of a residual elastic ordering process. With high-resolution time-of-flight techniques we analysed the dynamic structure factor for x=0.57. We demonstrate that the central peak consists of a static and a dynamic component. The results are compared with mode coupling theories which describe the glass transition in supercooled liquids.
