    Notes: The ability of ranitidine to protect the human gastric mucosa against aspirin-induced damage was investigated by timed measurements of blood loss collected by gastric washing. Ranitidine (150 mg) 1 h or 5 h before 900 mg aspirin (5 doses of each) over 48 h reduced subsequent mean bleeding from 7.7 μi/10 min to 2.6 μl/10 min or 3.4 μl/10 min, respectively. Both regimens were antisecretory at the time of aspirin administration, as judged by a rise in the pH of the aspirated washings. The prolonged protection against aspirin-induced bleeding achieved with twice daily dosing with ranitidine has dinical potential in the management of patients taking anti-inflammatory drugs.

Das Gerät enthält eine Wärmefluss-DSC-Sensorplatte aus Chromel in einer Heizkammer aus einer Kobaltlegierung, was Arbeiten in oxidierender Atmosphäre bis über 600 °C ermöglicht. Ein IBM-kompatibles Computersystem bietet alle Möglichkeiten der Datenverarbeitung und Programmregelung. Die Leistungsfähigkeit des Geräts wird an Hand von Experimenten mit Indium und Polyvinylchlorid demonstriert.
    Abstract: РЕЗЮМЕ Описан новый низкоте мпературный дифференциальный ск анирующий калоримег р, работающий в интерва ле температур от —150° д о 700°. Характерной деталью ДСК аппаратуры является чувствител ьная к тепловому пото ку пластинка из хромеля, находящая ся в кобальтовом сплаве камеры нагрев а и дающая возможност ь проводить измерения в окислите льной атмосфере выше 600°. Полная обработ ка данных и программи рованный контроль осуществля ется с помощью IBM компьютерн ой системы. Действие а ппаратуры показано на эксперим ентальных примерах с индием и по ливинилхлоридом.
    Notes: Abstract A new low temperature differential scanning calorimeter is described which operates over the temperature range −150 °C to 700 °C. The equipment features a chromel heat flux DSC sensor plate located in a cobalt alloy heating chamber, enabling work to be carried out in oxidizing atmospheres to above 600 °C. Full data processing and programme control facilities are provided by an IBM compatible computer system. The performance of the instrument is illustrated by experiments on indium and poly (vinyl chloride).

    Notes: Abstract Serial measurement ofin vitro immunologic parameters in patients is used to detect change in immune status over time due to disease progression and/or immunodulatory therapy. A statistical method is presented for looking at serial measurements on an individual to detect whether a change in a parameter is outside the bounds of expected within-individual variation. Analysis of variance is used, assuming a normal distribution, to obtain percentiles of the distribution of the absolute difference between consecutive values of immunologic parameters in a healthy population. The assumptions in this analysis are justified from a statistical point of view. We discuss how to use this statistical method to make judgments relevant to clinical immunology, including (1) how to construct a table that can be used to determine quickly if an “interesting” change for some standard immunologic parameters has occurred, (2) whether a linear (additive) or logarithmic (proportional) model for change might be more appropriate for a given parameter, and (3) how to modify the calculations if change is expected in a certain direction or if multiple pre- and/or postevent (clinical change or intervention) measurements are available.

    Notes: Conventional (whole animal) toxicity tests were made with Scrobicularia plana (Da Costa), an infaunal estuarine bivalve, and compared with the responses recorded from siphonal preparations. Exposure of Scrobicularia to low concentrations of triethyllead chloride and trimethyllead chloride, for 35 and 60 days respectively, produced typical response curves. However, mortality had not become asymptotic with time at lower concentrations, suggesting further mortality with increased exposure time. An approximate incipient lethal concentration was predicted.A siphonal preparation technique with isolated and in-situ inhalent siphons of Scrobicularia was used to estimate the lowest effect concentrations of alkyllead compounds. Response to alkyllead was indicated by contraction of the siphon, recorded via an isotonic transducer. Trialkyllead compounds were more toxic than the respective dialkylleads and inorganic lead. Toxicity of trialklleads and inorganic lead. Toxicity of trialkylleads increased with alkyl chain length. Pure tetraethyllead did not cause any siphonal contraction even when applied directly to the preparation. It was concluded that tetraethyllead has a low toxicity or is non-toxic in pure form.

    Notes: There are conflicting reports concerning the toxicity of tetraalkyllead (TAL) compounds to algae. A number of groups have found the TAL's to be comparable in toxicity with the trialkyllead compounds (R3Pb+), whereas in a recent report it is suggested that the TAL's themselves are completely non-toxic and any apparent toxicity is due to R3Pb+ breakdown products.With the object of identifying the toxic agent, the effect of Et4Pb (TEL) on two algal species was re-examined. Analyses were carried out during the course of the incubations to establish the nature and concentrations of organoleads present in both media and algae, and hence evaluate their relative contributions to total toxicity.Algae were also cultured in the presence of Me4Pb (TML), Me3PbCl, Et3PbCl, Bu3PbCl and Et2PbCl2 to assess relationships between alkyl chain length and degree of substitution around the lead on algal activity. Additions of selenide and sulphide were made to the Et3Pb+ and Et2Pb2+ systems to see if these environmentally abundant species reduced or enhanced organolead toxicity. Problems were encountered in the analysis of the heterogeneous TEL containing media. Regardless of the analytical problems, the results confirm the previous findings that TAL's are non-toxic to algae and it is the R3Pb+ breakdown products which are responsible for the apparent toxicity of the TAL's. The trialkylleads were the most toxic of the several alkyllead species studied, and within the trialkyl series toxicity increased with alkyl chain length. Neither selenide or sulphide had any significant ameliorative effect on alkyllead toxicity. It was found that the ionic organoleads were complexed on the TAL's and this complexing led to a number of unexpected results.
