Notes: Summary All school children in Patiala City (25,376) were examined to find out the incidence of scoliosis. There were 12,934 boys and 12,442 girls. Their ages ranged from 5 to 18 years. Adam's forward-bending test and a newly designed “Scoliometer” was used to detect and measure the rib hump in all cases. There was an overall incidence of scoliosis of 0.13%. This was higher in boys (0.15%) than in girls (0.10%). The majority of the curves were mild (81.25%). Paralytic scoliosis was the major group (43.7%) and most the result of poliomyelitis. The incidence was higher in the low socioeconomic group (0.4%), compared to the middle (0.12%) and high (0.01%) income groups.

Notes: Summary Resistant club foot remains an unsolved problem because of the complex aetiological and pathological factors, and is still seen quite frequently, especially in developing countries. The posteromedial skin contracture is a potent deforming force which is responsible for many failures or relapses. I report the results of an operation in which a rotation skin flap was combined with an extensive soft-tissue release. The age of the children was from 9 months to 10 years. The follow-up period was from one to 9 years with an average of 43 months, and in 50 cases for more than 5 years. I consider that the outcome has been excellent or good in 94 out of 100 feet.

Notes: Summary Closed form solutions have been obtained using Fourier transform method for the deflection, curvature and particle velocity of a long elastic beam when it is subjected to a concentrated transverse force which is varying with time. These solutions have been illustrated with the help of two force histories, i.e. a half-sine pulse and a rectangular pulse. Dimensionless parameters representing deflection, curvature and particle velocity have been plotted as functions of dimensionless distance and dimensionless time. Furthermore, the particular case of constant velocity impact which has been studied by other authors using different techniques has also been considered in the present paper and the results compare within numerical errors involved in the evaluation of integrals.

Notes: Summary Extent of heterosis for seed yield is an indicator for transgressive segregation in cross of self-pollinated crops. However, the extent of heterosis is thought to be related to the genetic diversity among the parents. Isoenzymic variation was used for estimating the genetic diversity. Eight varieties of green gram (Vigna radiata) were characterized for esterase, amylases, phosphatases, catalase and peroxidase isoenzymes. Differences in these systems were used to calculate a diversity index (D.I.). Hybrids produced from an inbred pair having higher D.I.'s outyielded those with low D.I.'s. However, the correlation (r) between D.I. and heterosis for seed yield was not consistent in different seasons but some of the desirable crosses could be singled out on the basis of D.I.

Notes: Abstract Two methods for the determination of interfacial shear stress and the orientation effects in well aligned short fibre-reinforced polypropylene specimens subjected to uniaxial tension have been discussed. Both methods are based on the stress-transfer model due to Kelly and Tyson, but the orientation effects are taken into account by different procedures. In the first procedure the stress and strain along the load axis are considered and the orientation factor is found to be close to cos4θ for θ ⩽ 45°. In the second procedure the fibre orientation is taken into account by resolving stress and strain in the fibre axis direction. The transverse strain is also considered with the help of experimentally determined values of Poisson's ratio. The second procedure was found to be very satisfactory and it also confirms the assumption of linear dependence of interfacial stress on the tensile stress in the fibre direction, as postulated in an earlier study, for all orientations.

Notes: Abstract A steady flow problem of a viscous, incompressible fluid through an orifice is widely applicable to many physical phenomena and has been studied previously by many researchers. A problem of such type has been solved by applying LAD method given by Roache [1]. The resulting system of linear equations is solved by Hockney's method [2].

Notes: Residual stresses, generally present in solid polymers, arise as a result of temperature gradients during solidification. These stresses influence the mechanical behavior of polymers and therefore it is important to measure them; most conventional methods are destructive. In the present work, a non-destructive photoelastic technique is discussed and applied to circular rods of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). This technique involves the measurement of the distribution of total birefringence across a diameter; the residual stress distribution is obtained numerically from the birefringence distribution. The influence of the birefringence caused by molecular orientation is also investigated. This technique is also applied to a glass rod, in which case the molecular birefringence is minimum. It is seen that the residual stresses obtained in this case are consistent with equilibrium considerations.

Notes: The large deformation behavior of nylon-6 when subjected to constant loading rate tests has been investigated experimentally. Three types of loadings - tension, torsion, and combined tension-torsion - have been used and the strain histories for each type analyzed. It is shown that a piecewise power law in time can adequately describe the strain histories up to equivalent strains as high as 30 percent for all cases. This piecewise power law shows well-defined transitions from one mode to the other while each mode is characterized by a power law exponent valid for all types of loading. On the basis of experimental results, it is also possible to establish the functional form of various kernels involved in the Green-Rivlin representation of the non-linear viscoelastic behavior of nylon-6. This method of finding kernels is much simpler than the conventional method of carrying out a large number of multi-step creep tests. A comparison is also made between the results of the present work and the well-known Findley equation, particularly with respect to the instantaneous strain response of materials.

Notes: The cross-sections for the production of L and M shell x-rays in some elements by 5.959 keV photons have been measured in order to provide data for use in photon-induced x-ray fluorescence analysis. An attempt has been made to interpret the experimental data in terms of the theoretical sub-shell photoionization cross-sections, fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields wherever available. In general, an agreement between the experimental and calculated values was found for the L shell. However, for the M shell, sufficient data for comparison were not available.
