Raman spectra of seven commercial poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lenses (IOLs) before and after implantation in the anterior chamber of rabbit eyes are reported and discussed in order to assess their biocompatibility.The material does not seem to change its structure on implantation; in particular the level of residual monomer, which is the main factor responsible for the biological intolerance of the lenses, remains constant.Providing a non-destructive structural probe, Raman spectroscopy is a suitable method for monitoring the biocompatibility of ophthalmological materials.
