    Notes: In a selected group of 8 patients with progressive alopecia areata (AA) leading to AA universalis, immunological aspects (in the peripheral blood and the tissue) were studied during the period of the intitial attack of the disease. The peripheral T-cell helper/suppressor ratio appeared not to be a reliable parameter for the disease activity. The intrabulbar and peribulbar distribution of T-cells, Langerhans cells and of HLA-DR expression in and around the anagen hair follicles in the progressive areas of the disease (region of exclamation-mark hairs) may suggest a T-cell-mediated injury primarily in the peribulbar regions of the follicles. The data presented tend to support the possibility that in the early development of AA, the dermal pailla (capillary network?) may be the prime target of immunologic injury.

    Notes: Summary In order to investigate the reproducibility of grading systems for prostatic carcinoma currently in use, a comparative histological grading study was done. These studies were carried out on tissue sections from radical prostatectomy specimens (N=50) stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Five pathologists with varying professional experience participated in the study, using five different grading systems: those of Broders, Brawn, Gleason (for statistical compilation the modified version), Mostofi, and a modified Mostofi grading method recently described by Schroeder and Mostofi. Weighted kappa coefficients ranged from 0.21 to 0.52. None of the systems investigated demonstrated a high degree of reproducibility (k〉0.70). Reproducibility of the systems described by Broders and Brawn was reasonably good (k=0.52 and 0.41, respectively). With the modified Gleason method (rearrangement of Gleason scores into 3 grades), a considerable difference was noted between the numerical agreement score (among at least 3 observers) and the measured kappa value (100% and 0.30, respectively). The methods described by Mostofi and Schroeder-Mostofi revealed only limited reproducibility (k=0.21 and 0.34, respectively).

    Notes: Abstract The efficiency of urea in wetland rice cultivation is known to be increased by placement below the soil surface. The penetration of broadcast urea into puddled soil might be a way to achieve placement of urea in soil. This paper combines an analysis of the free fall of urea granules in the atmosphere and a layer of water on the soil surface with measurements of granule penetration into puddled soils. The process of free fall can be described in terms of the height of fall in air, the depth of the water layer, and the terminal velocities and characteristic distances for free fall in air and water. The penetration depth of a particular granule with a particular velocity at the water/soil interface depends on the type of soil and its physical condition. Granule mass ranged from 0.1 to 0.5 g, granule velocity from 1 to 10 m s−1, depth of the water layer from 0 to 30 mm and penetration depth from 0 to 35 mm. There is some indication that the penetration depth is proportional to the square root of the kinetic energy at the water/soil interface.

    Notes: Abstract Clinical, morphological, ultrastructural and immunological studies were performed in a case of congenital self-healing non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The patient showed several aspects that have not been published before: a large nodule in the vulvar region, vesiculobullous elements and pneumonia (asymptomatic). The relationship of the vesicles and pneumonia to the histiocytic disorder is not clear. Ultrastructurally, worm-like (comma-shaped) particles, dense bodies and Birbeck granules were not found. Histiocytes were Leu-6 negative, and S100 (partly), Leu M3 and HLA-DR positive. Positive reactions were also obtained with anti-lysozyme and non-specific esterase. Several aspects of this case and of others described previously are discussed.
