Notes: Carbon K-shell NEXAFS (near edge x-ray absorption fine structure) spectra of oriented hydrocarbon chains in Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) monolayers were measured and used to study the orientation of these molecules. The LB monolayers were assembled from arachidic acid or cadmium or calcium arachidate on the oxidized Si(111) surface. The observed NEXAFS resonances are assigned to transitions to excited states which are localized on individual CH2 groups or C–C bonds. From a detailed analysis using curve-fitting techniques of the angular dependence of the various spectral peaks, the hydrocarbon chains of the cadmium arachidate monolayer is estimated to lie within 15° of the surface normal, the hydrocarbon chains of the calcium arachidate monolayer is estimated to be tilted by 33±5° from the surface normal, while the arachidic acid monolayer is not ordered at all. The determined chain orientations are discussed in terms of a microscopic model involving lateral interactions between the zig–zag hydrocarbon chains.

Notes: Polarized Raman measurements of Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) multilayers of cadmium arachidate (CdA) have been obtained through the application of integrated optical techniques. Excitation of either the transverse electric (TE) or transverse magnetic (TM) mode of an asymmetric slab waveguide was alternately used to produce Raman scattering in the CdA multilayers deposited on its surface. Analysis of the 90° scattered light with a polarizer placed at two mutually perpendicular positions for both the TE and TM modes of the waveguide produced a set of four measurements which were used to determine the orientation and lateral order of the CdA monolayer components. The extent of order in the LB film was then investigated as a function of temperature and compared with that of bulk CdA. The temperature of the order–disorder transition was found to be similar in both cases and consistent with that found previously from infrared studies.

Notes: The two isomeric compounds, octadecylfumaric acid and octadecylmaleic acid (C18H37OCOCH=CHCOOH) have been synthesized, and Langmuir–Blodgett films of their cadmium salts have been studied by means of transmission and grazing incidence reflection infrared spectroscopy. These measurements provided information about the orientation of molecular segments relative to the substrate surface as well as about the lateral packing of the chains in the unit cell. A structural change of the maleate film was revealed at elevated temperatures. Polymerization of the films was brought about by either UV irradiation or thermal treatment and was followed spectroscopically as a function of exposure time. By comparison with films polymerized on the water surface of a Langmuir trough, it was concluded that the molecular structure is independent of where the polymerization occurs. Interestingly, upon polymerization on the water surface the fumarate undergoes an expansion at constant surface pressure whereas the maleate contracts. A mixture of fumarate and maleate in the ratio of 1 to 3, however, forms a two dimensional solution and preserves its area upon polymerization, a critical feature required for the fabrication of crack free Langmuir–Blodgett films polymerized on solid substrates.
