    Notes: Abstract Tunable coherent radiation around 840, 830, and 795 nm has been generated upon two-photon excitation of sodium 4d and 5s levels, respectively. The generation is due to special parametric processes. A molecular nature of the emissions, as recently proposed, can be ruled out by the performed investigations.

    Notes: Abstract Spectra of laser-induced plasmas at low laser energies and intensities (around 100 mJ and 1010 W cm−2 respectively) have been recorded in the spectral range of 20 to 100 nm for different target materials, laser intensities at the target and laser wavelengths. For heavy target materials, a broadband spectrum with a spectral maximum typically around 30 nm is obtained. This broadband radiation source is well suited for photoionization processes and the generation of short wavelength inner-shell photoionization lasers. For the cadmium-photoionization laser, the influence of different soft X-ray spectra on the laser energy has been investigated. The potential of laser plasma soft X-ray sources for scientific and technical applications is briefly reviewed.

    Notes: Abstract Soft x-rays from a laser-produced plasma were used to perform innershell photoionization of Cd atoms and to generate laser radiation at 442 nm. To achieve longer interaction zones between the Cd vapor and the soft x-ray flux, up to three plasma spots have been applied. In this way a maximum laser energy of 300 μJ with a 600 mJ Nd:YAG laser for the plasma production was achieved. Experimental investigations and corresponding rate-equation calculations indicate, that photoelectrons play an important role in the total laser kinetics.

    Notes: Abstract Continuous laser oscillation on different lines in the spectral range of 1.85 to 3.41 μm, corresponding to transitions between higher lying atomic sodium levels, has been obtained by optical excitation of sodium vapor with Rhodamine 6G dye-laser radiation, tuned either around the 3p−4d resonance (∼ 568 nm) or the 3p−5s resonance (∼ 615 nm). The pump mechanism consists of an atomic two-step excitation as well as an excitation of diatomic sodium molecules and subsequent molecular-atomic collisional energy transfer. Laser operation with low threshold pump power (〈10 mW) and large pump laser detuning (500 GHz) has been observed.
