Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In korrosionsanatomischen Untersuchungen an menschlichen Lebern wurde geprüft, welche arterio-arteriellen Anastomosen zwischen den Aa. phrenicae inferiores und ästen der A. hepatica propria bestehen.
Notes: Summary A corrosion — cast anatomical study was performed on human livers. At first arterio-arterial anastomoses between the inferior phrenic arteries and branches of the main hepatic artery were investigated. Secondly, arterial communications between the right and left hepatic artery are described. 1. The anatomical-functional study of phrenico-hepatic anatomoses gives new detailed information on the arterial blood supply of the liver out of the phrenic arteries. These collaterals are a consistent finding. By far the largest part of the phrenicohepatic anastomoses is derived from the right inferior phrenic artery. The superior and posterior segments receive most of the anastomoses. In about 10 % of our cases we succeeded in filling almost the whole arterial system of the liver by injecting the inferior phrenic arteries. 2. There are three anastomotic pathways from the right hepatic artery to the left: the so-called portal anastomoses (hilar anstomoses), translobar vessels, and the capsular arteries.

Notes: Gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) has been applied to the study of thermodynamic interactions in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) plasticized by di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP). A number of vapor-phase “probes” were used to evaluate the Flory-Huggins thermodynamic parameter for the PVC-DnOP interaction in stationary phase mixtures of the components which covered the entire composition range. Experiments were carried out in the temperature span of 100-130°C. The interaction parameter was strongly negative, indicating high PVC-DnOP compatibility, up to 0.25 volume fraction of plasticizer. It then became less negative and finally positive at 0.55 volume fraction of DnOP, suggesting a lower compatibility limit. The composition dependence of the interaction parameter and its apparent variation with the chemical nature of the vapor-phase probe may reflect a nonrandom solution of the probe in the stationary phase and/or non-random mixing of PVC-DnOP, particularly at DnOP contents in the limited compatibility range. Evaluations of the influence of DnOP on zero-shear melt viscosity and Tg of compounds indicate that both thermodynamic interactions and volume-of-dilution effects must be taken into account in assessing the effectiveness of the plasticizer.

Notes: The complex relative premittivity K*(ω) of polymer-mica composites has been studied in the frequency range extending from about 10-2 to 107 Hz. Microwave plasma treatment in ethylene of the mica flakes leads to significant alterations of K*(ω) for the matrix polymers used - polyethylene, polystyrene, and a mixture of these two polymers. The origins of the dispersion characteristics were investigated using a series of polyethylene samples containing up to 50 wt-% of untreated mica. Comparing experimental results with theoretical analyses of the Maxwell-Wagner-Debye-like interfacial polarization effect, it is possible to identify two major contributions to K*(ω): a Debye-like dispersion centered near 102 Hz and a charge-diffusion mechanism which contributes primarily at low frequencies (≲10 Hz).

Notes: The surface property changes caused by exposure to specific time/temperature regimes have been followed by critical surface tension data (γc) in a series of styrene-acrylic polymers frequently used as film-formers. A simple, experimental method for γc evaluation, previously described proved useful for present purposes. Surface tensions change more rapidly when polymers age above their characteristic Tg. In the polymers studied, increases in γc indicate an apparent enrichment in the acrylic content of the surface, the rates apparently dominated by diffusion-controlled processes. The importance of the effect increases with overall acrylic content in the polymer and with molecular weight.

Notes: Films of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene, and a styrene/acrylic terpolymer have been cast from solutions of varying thermodynamic quality and the film properties studied by inverse gas chromatography and by critical surface tension measurements. Surface properties of the non-polar polystyrene were independent of solvent medium, but significant variations in these properties were observed in the case of PMMA and the terpolymer. Solvent balance also appeared to affect the bulk properties of the latter films, as judged by the penetration rates of interacting liquids. The observations indicate the feasibility of controlling film properties of the solid by the appropriate selection of solution media; a time-dependent variation in solid properties is to be expected, however, as the film structure attains an equilibrium state.

Notes: Inverse chromatography was applied to evaluate interaction parameters for polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and CaCO3, these parameters being based on retention volumes of proton-donor, -acceptor, and neutral vapors. The acid/base characteristics of CaCO3 were controllably altered by exposing the particulate to microwave plasmas sustained by acidic and basic vapors. It was shown that the ease-of-dispersion of fillers in the polymer matrixes related with the acid-base interaction balance in the polymer-filler pair, and varied widely with the surface treatment given to the filler. Mechanical properties at large deformation of the filled polymers and their durability also were shown to depend on surface interactions. Optimization of properties in PVC compounds was favored when strong acid-base interactions could take place with the plasma-modified filler. In the case of PE, properties were superior when unmodified filler was used; imparting strongly acidic or basic surface properties to the filler diminished its “compatibility” and usefulness with this nonpolar matrix.

Notes: Various microwave plasma treatments were applied to Kevlar in the form of multifilament fabric and single fiber. Plasma-modified fabrics were used to construct two-ply laminates using a triazine resin adhesive. Very significant increases in the bond strength of laminates may be attributed to the plasma treatments; the effectiveness of plasma treatment is best utilized by reducing to a minimum the time interval between plasma exposure and contact of treated substrate with impregnating (adhesive) fluid. Mechanical properties of single Kevlar fibers seem to deteriorate somewhat on plasma exposure, but the cohesive strength of multifilament cloth is enhanced by the same treatments.

Notes: Suzorite mica has been surface modified by microwave plasma treatment in ethylene gas. The surface-treated mica was used as a filler in polyethylene, polystyrene, and a mixture of these two polymers. Significant changes in rheological behavior ensue. These indicate that adhesion between polyethylene and irradiated mica is superior to that of interfaces using unirradiated mica. In contrast, ethylene irradiation reduces the ability of filled polystyrene compounds to store elastic energy in melt flow, an effect consistent with impaired adhesion at interfaces involving these components. An intermediate situation exists in the case of the two-polymer blend. The tensile properties of these systems also reflect surface treatment, reinforcement occurring in polyethylene-containing compounds, while the tensile properties of polystyrene composites deteriorate. Plasma-induced surface modifications of fillers to produce desired property changes in specified polymer matrixes are implied by the present work, but a fuller understanding of the chemistry of surface modification reactions is needed to substantiate these implications.
