    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Aufgrund anatomischer Gegebenheiten, sekretorischer und klinischer Untersuchungen, sowie des signifikanten Einflusses des intraoperativen Elektrotests auf postoperative Sekretion und Rezidivrate, ist folgendes grundsätzliches Vorgehen bei der PSV gerechtfertigt: 1. ausgedehnte Befreiung von Kardia und Fundus, 2. Denudation des Oesophagus auf 6 cm, 3. Skeletieren der Kleinkurvatur bis auf 6 cm an den Pylorus heran, 4. Vollständigkeitskontrolle mit dem intraoperativen Elektrotest, und 5. in Einzelfällen die vordere oder zirkuläre Myotomie des Oesophagus. Die Indikation zur Myotomie sollte nur aufgrund eines persistierend positiven Elektrotests gestellt werden.
    Notes: Summary Based on anatomical conditions, results of clinical trials, and the significant influence of the intraoperative clectrotest on postoperative secretion and recurrence rate after PGV, a reliable surgical technique should include: (1) extended dissection of the cardia and the fundus, (2) denudation of the oesophagus up to 6 cm, (3) skeletonization of the lesser curvature down to 6 cm from the pylorus, (4) an intra-operative electrotest and (5) in selected cases an anterior or circular myotomy of the oesophagus. Myotomy can only be justified by a persistingly positive electrotest.

    Notes: The effects of crosslinking both unswollen and swollen cotton cellulose on the photoinitiated reactions of N-methylolacrylamide (NMA) with cotton are reported. Formaldehyde and dimethylolethyleneurea were used as crosslinking agents. Crosslinked cellulose had a decreased efficiency of photoconversion of NMA to poly(N-methylolacrylamide) (pNMA) with cotton. If the cellulose was crosslinked in the swollen state, increased dosages of ultraviolet radiation gave complete conversion of NMA to pNMA with cotton. Cotton that was crosslinked in the unswollen state probably restricted movement of the aqueous solution of NMA within the fiber and fabric structures and decreased chain propagation within the structures. This restriction resulted in decreased photoconversion of NMA to pNMA with cotton. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy of cotton cellulose that was crosslinked in the swollen state and of cotton cellulose that was crosslinked in the unswollen state showed that swollen cotton was less compacted than unswollen cotton.

    Notes: The effect of temperature (100°C) and heating time (up to 384 hr) on the physicochemical properties of high molecular weight (M̄p ≅ 4 × 106) partly hydrolyzed (τ ≅ 31%) polyacrylamide (HPAM-25) solutions with initial pH values near 4 and 7, respectively, is reported. Potentiometric and spectroscopy data indicate that upon heating the solutions for 16 days the extent of hydrolysis is increased up to around 90%. The viscosity behavior, especially in the presence of bivalent salt (CaCl2), can be explained by taking such an increase in hydrolysis into consideration. From light scattering data, it is shown that the conformational changes are not correlated with molecular weight degradation.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Standardtechnik der PGV wird in ihren 6 wesentlichen Schritten schematisch und in Realaufnahmen gezeigt. Besondere Beachtung wird der perikardialen Dissektion und der genauen Darstellung des intraoperativen vagomotorischen Elektrotests als Vollständigkeitskontrolle geschenkt. Der Test erlaubte es, in einer prospektiven Studie mit 728 PGV (89 Operateure) in 46 % der Operationen übersehene Vagusfasern nachzuweisen. Bei vollständiger Vagotomie („negativer” Test) betrug die Rezidivrate nach Ulcus duodeni nach 2 Jahren 3,7 %, der PAO-Insulin 5,8 mmol/h. Bei „positivem” Test fanden sich in 9 % Rezidive (P 〈 0,05) und der PAO-Insulin war 10,3 mmol/h (2P 〈 0,001).
    Notes: Summary The standard technique of PGV with its six main steps is demonstrated. Special emphasis is put on dissection of the cardia and distal esophagus. Application, interpretation, and results of the intraoperative vagomotor electrotest for completeness of vagotomy are shown in detail. The electrotest revealed 46 % of 728 PGV (89 operating surgeons) in a prospective multicenter trial to be incomplete despite the anatomical appearance. Two years after complete PGV (‘negative test’), the recurrence rate in duodenal ulcer patients was 3.7 % and PAO-insulin 5.8 mmol/h. In patients left with a positive test, the recurrence rate was 9 % (P 〈 0.05) and PAO-insulin 10.3 mmol/h (2P 〈 0.001).

    Notes: Cotton and cotton/polyester blends treated with phosphorus-nitrogen polymers and poly-(vinyl bromide) for flame retardance were examined in the electron microscope. A considerable amount of the poly(vinyl bromide) was retained by the cotton fibers. Expansion studies indicated that the poly(vinyl bromide) acted either as a morphologic adhesive or as a nonpolar matrix impervious to penetration by methacrylate before swelling.

    Notes: A wrinkle-resistant cotton fabric was produced by photoinitiated free-radical reaction of a glycidyl methacrylate monomer from a methanol-water solution to form a poly(glycidyl methacrylate) copolymer, followed by crosslinking reactions of oxirane groups of the copolymer with cellulose. The product had increased conditioned and wet recovery angles and retained breaking and tearing strengths and stiffness values in the ranges normally obtained for wrinkle-resistant cottons. The effects of these reactions on the fiber structure were determined by transmission electron microscopy. The modified fibers were resistant to dissolution in cupriethylenediamine dihydroxide.

    Notes: He(I) and He(II) photoelectron spectra of benzo[b]selenophene and benzo[b]telluropheneThe photoelectron spectra of benzo[b]selenophene (2) and benzo[b]tellurophene (1) have been recorded with He(I) and He(II) radiation and been compared to those of benzo[b]thiophene (3), benzo[b]furan (4), indole (5) and indene (6). The first four bands are correlated with π-orbitals, of which the highest occupied one is strongly localized on the heteroatom in the case of 1. The results are in agreement with semi-empirical PPP-calculations.

    Notes: The ionisation energies and the HeI photoelectron spectra of the N-oxides of diazabenzenes are presented. The valence electronic structures of the N-oxides are discussed in view of the ionisation energies, and the profiles, of the bands. The interpreted data are compared to calculations which are in good agreement. The results are correlated to the physicochemical studies, and particularly to the electronic absorption spectroscopy, of the N-oxides. The assignment of the photoelectron spectra of the azabenzenes are considered with reference to the spectra of their N-oxides.

    Notes: The He(II) photoelectron spectra of phosphabenzene 2 and arsabenzene 3 yield additional ionization energies in the region 17 to 20 eV. The relative intensity changes of the first three bands, compared to their relative intensities in the He(I) spectra, provide support for the previously proposed sequence of states ˜X = 2B1, ˜A = 2A2, ˜B = 2A1. This and the angular dependence of the photoelectron band intensities in the spectra of 2 and 3 is in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions made by von Niessen, Diercksen & Cederbaum [9].
