Notes: Abstract— Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity was measured in the carotid body. superior cervical ganglion and adrenal glands of the rat under normal conditions and at 48 h following exposure of the animals for 1-3 h in a low O2 atmosphere. Basal TH levels were 5-6 nmol/h/mg tissue for both the carotid body and the ganglion. Forty-eight hours after hypoxia, there was an increase in enzyme activity in both tissues which paralleled the severity of the hypoxia but was greater in the carotid body than the superior cervical ganglion. Thus, following exposure to 5% O2 in N2 for two 30-min periods (20-min interim), TH activity had increased by 50% in the carotid body and 33% in the ganglion; after exposure to 10% O2 in N2 for 3 h (continuous), TH levels were increased by 37% in the carotid body and 12% in the ganglion. In the adrenal gland, basal TH activity was 3.42 ± 1.87 nmol/h/mg tissue, and this value was unchanged following either level of hypoxia.

Notes: Summary Atrophy of the brain as depicted on CT scan was correlated with social and psychological testing in 100 selected volunteers with no known neurologic or psychiatric impairment. The data indicated cognitive impairment based on psychometric test results in those with atrophy, independent of its severity. No organic or biochemical changes could be found that could explain these findings. Repeat examinations at 1-year intervals are planned to evaluate the evolution of these findings.

Notes: Summary The structural organization of the rostral, lateral and postinfundibular regions of the median eminence (ME) of 5-day cyclic diestrous rats was studied with light and electron microscopic methods. The ependymal cells lining (i) the floor of the infundibular recess (IR) at rostral levels, (ii) the lateral extensions of the IR, and (iii) the floor of the premammillary recess appear to represent the same type of tanycyte ependyma (β1 tanycytes). In the entire width of the rostral and postinfundibular palisade regions, as well as in the lateral palisade region of the preinfundibular ME, the processes of the β1 tanycytes form a continuous cuff. This cuff separates the nerve endings from the blood vessels and the pars tuberalis. At this level, synaptoid contacts between neurosecretory axons and the ependymal cuff can be observed. The ultrastructural characteristics of the β1 tanycytes are described and their ependymal endings tentatively classified into three types. In the lateral regions of the ME, the Golgi study revealed the presence of two fiber systems: (i) one possessing a latero-medial trajectory and distributed in the subependymal region; (ii) the other formed by a loose longitudinal tract originating from neurons of the arcuate nucleus. Some functional implications of the cellular organization of the rat ME are discussed.

Notes: Summary Intracisternal injections of tunicamycin, an inhibitor of glycosylation, decreased the incorporation of [35S]cysteine into the neurophysins in the rat neurohypophysis. Histochemical and immunocytochemical studies showed that there was no concomitant decrease in the amount of secretory product in the perikarya of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial neurones. Indeed there was an increase, although this was not associated with neurosecretory granules as judged electron-microscopically. Tunicamycin led to the formation of socalled “colloid droplets” which were immunopositive and of which the ultrastructural correlates appeared to be product-filled dilatations of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The observations are interpreted to suggest that glycosylation plays a rôle in the packaging of secretory material in the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system.

Notes: Abstract Strips of rumen wall from bovine fetuses were incubated in an organ bath with prostaglandin F2 alpha (0.13 to 33.76 μg/ml). The highest reactivity with a submaximal dose (17.03 μg/ml) was observed in the period between 3.0 and 7.9 months of fetal age. A smaller response, but higher than in 1.0 to 2.9 months old fetuses, was observed in the 8.0 to 8.9 months fetuses. The period of the highest reactivity to prostaglandin F2 alpha coincides with the age of onset of papillary morphogenesis and the period of highest reactivity to autonomic and putative transmitter drugs.
