Notes: Abstract K-, L- andM-x ray production cross sections for the molecular excitation regime in heavy ion-atom collisions (Z 1+Z 2≧100) are reported for the projectile velocity range 1.3–3.7 a.u. Outer-shell vacancy configurations of the collision partners having experienced inner shell vacancy creating collisions are deduced from the x-ray spectra. The influence of outer shell vacancy occupation on fluorescence yields is discussed and vacancy production cross sections are derived from x-ray production cross sections.

Notes: Abstract The velocity of the quasimolecular x-ray emitter is found via Doppler shift measurements. It is in agreement with the center of mass velocity. Applying Doppler shift corrections the intrinsic anisotropy of the quasi-molecularM radiation is determined as a function of x-ray energy for 6 to 45 MeV I bombardment on thin Au targets. Position and amplitude of the maximum anisotropy in the x-ray spectrum depend on impact energy.

Notes: Summary The thick and anatomically complex stalks of a Western Australian species ofCryptonemia (Cryptonemiales, Rhodophyta) are characterized by growth rings in cross-section. Cells of the medulla may die as the diameter of the stalks increases to maximum widths of over 2 centimeters, the remaining cell walls appearing to function as purely supportive tissue (a phenomenon hitherto unreported in the red algae). All cells of the stalk are enclosed by thick, compact cell walls and are interconnected by pit connections which become progressively more convoluted and fluted with increasing distance of the cells from the stalk surface. This is the first report of such a pit-connection morphology. It is suggested that the modification may serve to aid transport of solutes towards the more deeply-buried layers of living cells.

Notes: Abstract For heavy collision systems withZ UA ≧100 the excitation mechanism for electrons in molecular orbitals from 2p 1/2 1/2 up to 3d3/2 1/2, which end up inK andL levels of the collision partners, is investigated for Iodine projectile velocityv between 1.3 and 3.7 a.u. (i.e. 6.3 MeV≦E i ≦45 MeV). For 2p 1/2 1/2 excitation a prevailing radial coupling excitation mechanism is found. In a two state approximation coupling strengths are derived for decisive isolated crossings; for the strong variation of the projectileL x-ray spectra with targetZ and impact velocity a Landau Zener type model is suggested.

Notes: Abstract The PAC technique has been applied to study the influence of gas collisions on the 1.98 MeV 2+→0+ angular correlation for18O ions excited and recoiling in helium. A microscopic description of the pressure dependence of the perturbation in terms of collision cross sections has been developed. The data are in order of magnitude agreement with measured charge-exchange cross sections. Competing processe (e.g. spin-flip collisions) with comparable cross sections appear to be excluded.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation into the effects of alternating current on magnesium anodesLaboratory tests were made to study the effects of alternating current on magnesium anodes. The electrolytes used were 20% soil solution (resistivity 34 Ωm), 0.72% sodium sulphate solution (resistivity 1 Ωm) and desalinated water (4.000 Ωm).The tests showed that it is not the a. c. voltage but the a. c. density which is the reason for a positive potential shift in magnesium anode systems. The critical density is 20 A/m2. Polarity reversal in the magnesium/iron galvanic cell occurs at an a. c. density of 60 A/m2 depending on the electrolyte; at this density, the anodic magnesium becomes cathodic. Magnesium anode mass loss tests carried out to study the effect of alternating current on magnesium anodes showed that the anode mass loss amounts to approx. 20 grammes/day/m2 at a current density of 20 A/m2; mass loss increases as a linear function of a. c. density. As far as pipeline applications are concerned, it is important to note that anode mass loss is particularly high in low resistivity soils in areas where high a. c. voltages are induced into the pipeline system.

Notes: Abstract In view of the high water content of manganese nodules, it is essential to make the analyses on samples dried up to constant weight. Besides, the strongly hygroscopic behaviour of already dried manganese nodules should be taken into account. Accurate results of analysis can only be obtained, if these factors are considered.
