Notes: Normal term human decidua-chorion, amnion and placenta were examined for possible synthesis of prolactin (PRL) by organ culture of tissue fragments in medium M199. Before incubation, higher PRL concentrations were found in decidua-chorion (27.7±5.7 ng/mg protein; mean±SE) and amnion (19.7±6.9 ng/mg protein) than in placenta (3.1±0.5 ng/mg protein; p 〈0.005). Incubated deciduachorion released significantly more PRL into culture medium than did amnion or placenta. After 72 hours culture, the PRL concentration of decidua-chorion remained high (17.9±6.4 ng/mg protein); that in amnion (2.3±1.9 ng/mg protein) fell to approach that of placenta (1.4±1.0 ng/mg protein). In further studies, fragments of decidua-chorion were incubated in medium RPMI 1640 without or with puromycin (0.04 mM) or cycloheximide (0.1 mM). A decrease in medium PRL concentration was observed within four hours of adding these inhibitors of protein synthesis. At four hours, the PRL content of decidua-chorion cultured in puromycin (12.4±3 8 ng/mg protein) or cycloheximide (11.9±2.9 ng/mg protein) was lower than tissue incubated in medium alone (25.5±4.1 ng/mg protein; p 〈0.05). Comparable differences in tissue content and medium concentration were also seen at 24 and 72 hours. We conclude that human decidua-chorion synthesizes a protein immunologically simjlar to PRL and that this tissue may represent the principal source of amniotic fluid PRL.

Notes: ‘Retraction spaces’ observed in 18 of 30 basal cell carcinomas were readily classified into two distinct types using the PAP immunoperoxidase technique and an antibody to human type IV collagen, raised in rabbits. In processing artefacts, true retraction spaces were observed between the epithelial cells and the basal lamina, while in areas of stromal mucinous change, accumulation of mucinous material resulted in clear spaces separating the normal stroma from the overlying basal lamina.

Notes: [Auszug] The neural tissues examined comprised cerebellum and cerebrum from rat, mouse, rabbit, guinea pig, sheep and chicken, and spinal cord from rat, mouse and chicken. Synaptosome8- and myelin9-enriched fractions were also isolated from chicken forebrain; effective enrichment was established by electron ...

Notes: [Auszug] Placentae and amniotic membranes were collected from normal pregnancies of 12-40 weeks gestation, which had been terminated for psychiatric reasons in the second trimester by hysterotomy or had been delivered vaginally either prematurely or at term in the third trimester. The tissue was immediately ...

Notes: The effect of concentrations of 0-3% tannic acid on root growth, starch, soluble carbohydrate and alpha and beta amylase was determined during germination of a low tannin sorghum variety. At higher concentrations of tannic acid root growth was suppressed. Starch degradation and accumulation of soluble carbohydrates were reduced and both alpha and beta amylase synthesis was decreased. This suggests that tannins retard starch degradation indirectly by inhibiting the synthesis of starch hydrolytic enzymes during germination.

Notes: Summary In five out of 51 adult, male patients with acute non-lymphocytic leukemia, Klinefelter's syndrome was demonstrated karyotypically. The incidence of this syndrome in our material is very much increased in comparison with the frequency at birth. In this article the medical histories of the patients are given and the possible connection between the constitutional chromosome abnormality and acute non-lymphocytic leukemia is discussed. Immunological or hormonal abnormalities or an increased virus susceptibility might be predisposing factors.
